Formed in 1967 in Oakland, California, this durable funky soul group was originally known as the Motown's Soul Band. For more than a quarter of a century, Tower of Power has worn its very funky heart on its very funky sleeve. It's right there in the title of their steaming new album Souled Out. With 25 years of recording and touring experience behind them, Tower of Power still garners reviews calling them a "a very 1990's sounding band." Melding jazz, funk, rock and soul in a way no other group ever has, the 10-piece outfit is, as a recent Hollywood Reporter review called them "tighter than a clenched fist."
Bandleader Emilio Castillo fell in love with soul music. As a teenager he started a group called the Motown's to play the music he loved. When baritone saxophonist Stephen "The Funky Doctor" saw the Motown's at a county fair in 1967, he introduced himself to Castillo and the two became fast friends. The first song the pair penned together was the band's signature classic "You're Still a Young Man."
Hit album followed hit album in the 70's: Bump City, Back To Oakland, Urban Renewal, In The Slot and Live & In Living Color. Tower scored pop/R&B single hits with You're Still a Young Man, So Very Hard To Go, and Don't Change Horses (In the Middle of a Stream). After 25-plus years, Tower of Power has recorded some 15-plus albums and a zillion-plus live shows.
