Not what I expected

After my recent 3 night stay at the Hotel Indigo, I can say without doubt that I will never stay there again. The hotel was lovely, lots of natural lighting, beautiful floors and a nice layout. However, we seemed to have one problem after another. First: My dad's toilet clogged twice, having to get staff to come up and use a snake to unclog it. Second: The in room "secure" safe deemed to be too secure, as once our valuables were locked in there we were unable to get them out. They hotel actually had to bring a guy over to drill the safe because of it's malfuntion. Three: For some reason our room was never cleaned the entire stay... we aren't one to complain (minus this review) so we left it at that. Four: If you aren't dog friendly, this is not the place for you. This hotel is very dog friendly, and many of the guests come from all around to bring their dogs. To add to that, on the 9th floor at night they have what is called "yappy hour" on the balcony. I attended a yappy hour to find around 50 drunk people with equally as many scared and paranoid dogs. There was dog excrement all over the deck and the smell about knocked me down. Needless to say, that will be my last yappy hour. Five: The elevators kept braking down the entire time we were there. Sometimes we would get stuck in them for several minutes before the doors magically opened and let us out. The elevators are operated by your room key, but the elevator key reader continued to fail, making going up and down a huge ordeal. Six: The hotel amenities were fair at best. The gym was tiny, there is no spa, there is no pool, no room balcony. For the price you can easily get all of these things else where. Seven: The staff were a bit clueless. They didn't seem to understand even the simpliest request or question. They acted bewildered when I asked if we could get extra cream for our coffee... and at one point I asked the simple question "Does this hotel have a spa or sauna." Gauging by their confusion to this question, you would have thought I was speaking in tongue, or that I had something hideous trapped in my teeth. It took at least 5 minutes for them to answer "no, we don't have a spa or a sauna." Instead they kept trying to direct me to local spa's and sauna's in the area, when I made it very clear that it was 10 PM at night and I had no intentions of making a midnight spa trip across town. Overall, the hotel wasn't horrible... as I mentioned before, it's beautiful and has a fantastic restauraunt. We tried several hamburger places around town and I still think that the hotel Indigo has the best hamburger in San Diego. However, based on my experience, I would never stay there again or recommend it to anyone.

The Indigo is a beautiful property, located in lovely downtown San Diego. Clean, quiet streets, close to the nightlife of the Gaslamp Quarter, Petco Field, public rail transit, and freeways. Everything about the hotel itself is a plus. Then why is my Value rating only 4/5? Parking. Perhaps I should have seen this coming, given the location: valet parking was an extra THIRTY-EIGHT bucks per night. The only other option was feeding the street parking meter every two hours between 8am-6pm, or hoofing it from a self-park lot a couple of blocks away. If I had known this beforehand, I may still have stayed here. But it was a nasty surprise while checking in. It added $114 to our four day trip. Hence, my value rating took a hit.

I have stayed in a few different Hotel Indigo's around the country and all of them have been wonderful. The only issue that I had with the Hotel Indigo Gaslamp Quarter location is that the cleaning staff didn't clean the bathroom very well. Although i did have my personal hygiene items on the counter, they didn't wipe it down nor take the glasses that were used away. Other than that the staff was friendly and kind, the valet parking was a little annoying with such a small area in front of the building but all was wonderful especially with me having my two young boys along.
