We stayed at Hotel 71 last summer - myself and 2 children. We had never been to Chicago before. We were so impressed with the City and the hotel. The location was perfect - we could walk to everything we needed. It is on the water so the views are beautiful - close to the wonderful shopping on the Magnificent Mile - close to the parks and art museum - it was all we wanted. Small gym on top floor with great views. We took breakfast up the street - 100 yards but hotel has small restaurant too. Would recommend the hotel. Internet was patchy but overall worked.

The construction noise, though limited, was pretty understandable since the hotel is in the process of renovating. The room itself was great, with one major exception. This is the first hotel (upscale, decent, or very low end) that I have been to that did not have black-out curtains on the windows. That meant that each morning at about 6:30 the room was bright and sunny; not something I was looking forward to after staying out late with business meetings at the bars. I ended up having to build a wall of extra pillows on the bed and hide my face behind them to get a little extra sleep. The room and staff overall was really great, but being able to sleep past 7:00 would have made the experience much better.

The location was wonderful for getting around Chicago. The room we were given was spacious, clean and well-appointed. The major disappointment was the fitness facility, which (we hope) was under construction. No warning about the poor condition of the facility, which should have been blocked off from public access. So, if you want that amenity, be sure to ask whether it is up and running.

We paid a little extra to get a River View room, and it was well worth it, especially at sunrise and sunset, with a large picture window overlooking the Chicago River to both the west and the east. The room was incredibly spacious - much bigger than we really needed. The beds were very comfy and the bathroom was crystal clean with lots of closet space. The staff was quite helpful (many suggestions for restaurants and tips on navigating the public transportation system) and I found it to be a very nice touch that they remembered the names of each of the guests and welcomed us personally every morning and evening by name. If you're arriving by train, as we were, take the water taxi - a short walk from Union Station - directly to the base of the hotel on the other side of the river. It's cheap and fun! The only downside was the very small bistro-like restuarant. At the time we were there, the hotel was offering a coupon good for a free meal so we got to try it for free. Our breakfast was very good - but the price, had we actually paid, was very steep. We ate elsewhere for the rest of our stay. The next time I'm in Chicago, I will definitely stay here. But I'll try to book a little earlier to get an even better rate.
