The Best Western Hotel California is an older hotel on Geary Street three blocks from Union Square and six blocks from the powell Street BART station/Powell cable car terminus. It is ideally suited for anyone who plans to tour the entire city using public transportation. It is reasonably priced, the beds were comfortable, the rooms were clean, and the breakfast buffet was great. I appreciated the wi-fi connection, the safe in the room and the refridgerator (my wife, three teenage sons and I stayed in the king-queen suite). No five star accomodations by any means, but that was not what I wanted. I wanted a nice, reasonably inexpensive place to stay in the heart of the city without all of the unnecessary and expensive glitz. Keep in mind: the street noise is substantial at the Hotel California. Also, the neighborhood gets a little shetchy as you go south and west of the hotel (into the Tenderloin neighborhood) and it appeared as though the "sketchiness" extended to the hotel late at night. Neither factor bothered us much...we were exhausted from full days and in bed by 10 pm, and there is not much we wanted to see in the Tenderloin anyway. Finally, the staff was helpful and friendly. I would stay there again.

Apparently if you're over 21 and checking into this hotel, you get a complimentary shot of Tequila. A major plus to most other places. The building itself had some history, seeings how it was over 90 years old. Yet the way that it was presented one wouldn't have thought that. Inside everything seemed perfect. Outside was another thing. While not in the staff or owners ability to control random things like homeless people, Vagrants tend to stay nearby. The 'Tenderloin' is one block away if you go down Jones st. Yet for pricing, the trip in it self. I found each day or night I came by to the hotel as a refuge or means to help recharge for another walking filled day around San Fran.

Having stayed previously at several other hotel's in the Union Square area, I found The Hotel California to be the best value. The hotel is full of century old charm, architectural detail and art work. The staff was very friendly, helpful and delivered efficient service. The room was well appointed with many little extras and a beautiful decor. The restaurant and bar located just off the lobby was a very enjoyable experience. The location was very convenient for a quick effortless level walk to Union Square, Chinatown or to catch a cable car to Fisherman's Wharf. Emphasis on effortless walk, as San Francisco is so hilly. There where also many restaurants a short walk from the hotel. I highly recommend Max's, which is on the way to Union Square.

Good place to stay in the heart of San Francisco. So close totransportation, tourist draws, good restaurants... We had a two room suite, which served our purposes OK-traveling with two small children and a grandma;. But there's no place there for kids to stretch their limbs, unless you take them to a local park/playground. Check in and check out took a long time, as they only had one person working the front desk at any one time. Valet parking could be a hassle - take everything you need from your car up to your room as the parking lot is 3 blocks away and takes 20 minutes or more for the valet to retrieve. The hotel also needs to update their breakfast signup sheet, as it says that the continental breakfast costs $*/person, when in fact, it's part of your room charge. We missed breakfasts there two days before we learned this.

Our first trip to California from FL. Flew into Sacramento and flew out of San Jose. We spent 2 days in San Francisco and I booked way ahead into the Hotel California. We got a great rate by booking ahead. Staff was positioned outside when we pulled up and parked our car as we checked in. The room had no fridge which we wanted so we were immediately given another room. Our room was small but bright and cheery with three big windows right on the street. It also was very clean; shiny hardwood floors. Yes, it was noisy but IT IS THE CITY and it was an experience I get quiet all the time at home. It was right in the heart of things with the trolley about 3 blocks away. p.s. Loved the Saturday morning Market, the Golden Gate Park and riding the trolleys up Nob Hill.
