Our timing was bad as Gay Pride weekend was upon us when we arrived. The noise was deafening. The night club next door to the hotel had very loud music until 2:00 A.M. We didn't get much sleep. We booked this place for four nights. Only two of the nights didn't have the loud music. The breakfast was just so so because there were no sausages or eggs. Wasn't too bothered by the homeless. Just don't pay any attention to them. Another negative was there is no AC. The windows didn't even have screens. It was kind of hot and it didn't cooled down until late at night but with the loud noise, the windows had to be shut. The windows were not too much of a help in blocking the noise. This place may be okay if it weren't for the noise.
Do you love noise? Then this is the hotel for you!05/15/2013

Q: Who's genius idea was it to put cheap wooden flooring and rolling office chairs in hotel rooms? A: Best Western! Q: Who booked a family with 3 toddlers in the top floor of the hotel, so 3 surrounding rooms below them heard loud noise all day and night? A: Best Western! Q: Who said "Please let us know if you have any issues with your room so we can correct it immediately", but actually answers: "I'm sorry, we can't do anything about that"? A: Best Western! Q: Who will give you a room without curtains and shutters that won't close? A: Best Western! Q: Who lets unattended town cars park in front of their hotel and not ask them to move when you're trying to load your car (also without assistance)? Q: Yep, Best Western! Q: Who cut his 2 night reservation short by one night and will never stay at a Best Western again? A: This guy!

The Best Western Hotel California is an older hotel on Geary Street three blocks from Union Square and six blocks from the powell Street BART station/Powell cable car terminus. It is ideally suited for anyone who plans to tour the entire city using public transportation. It is reasonably priced, the beds were comfortable, the rooms were clean, and the breakfast buffet was great. I appreciated the wi-fi connection, the safe in the room and the refridgerator (my wife, three teenage sons and I stayed in the king-queen suite). No five star accomodations by any means, but that was not what I wanted. I wanted a nice, reasonably inexpensive place to stay in the heart of the city without all of the unnecessary and expensive glitz. Keep in mind: the street noise is substantial at the Hotel California. Also, the neighborhood gets a little shetchy as you go south and west of the hotel (into the Tenderloin neighborhood) and it appeared as though the "sketchiness" extended to the hotel late at night. Neither factor bothered us much...we were exhausted from full days and in bed by 10 pm, and there is not much we wanted to see in the Tenderloin anyway. Finally, the staff was helpful and friendly. I would stay there again.

Apparently if you're over 21 and checking into this hotel, you get a complimentary shot of Tequila. A major plus to most other places. The building itself had some history, seeings how it was over 90 years old. Yet the way that it was presented one wouldn't have thought that. Inside everything seemed perfect. Outside was another thing. While not in the staff or owners ability to control random things like homeless people, Vagrants tend to stay nearby. The 'Tenderloin' is one block away if you go down Jones st. Yet for pricing, the trip in it self. I found each day or night I came by to the hotel as a refuge or means to help recharge for another walking filled day around San Fran.

Having stayed previously at several other hotel's in the Union Square area, I found The Hotel California to be the best value. The hotel is full of century old charm, architectural detail and art work. The staff was very friendly, helpful and delivered efficient service. The room was well appointed with many little extras and a beautiful decor. The restaurant and bar located just off the lobby was a very enjoyable experience. The location was very convenient for a quick effortless level walk to Union Square, Chinatown or to catch a cable car to Fisherman's Wharf. Emphasis on effortless walk, as San Francisco is so hilly. There where also many restaurants a short walk from the hotel. I highly recommend Max's, which is on the way to Union Square.
