My wife and I just spend 6 nights in this resort, the grounds are great beautiful, but some of the pave-ways are in need of attention! also the main stairs are very awkward, the rooms are ok, but you are not going to CR to spent to much time in them! they are clean and simple, they will do. They have 3 restaurants: 1 buffet, and 2 reservation only! must reserved in the morning of the day you will like to attend, also they have a dress code (long pants) not mention anywhere else in their web site. The buffet staff are very professional and attentive, the food is fairly good for all-inclusive, sea food night was excellent!. Beware of the special night when all the other restaurants are closed and the buffet becomes a Mexican "a la carte" reservation only! only night that the quality and service falls way down! (not Carlos and crew that night) waited for 45 minutes to get our order (out of 5 choices) dessert was not worth the wait (20 min) all the guest were upset, management should take note and leave it buffet. Also at check in you will be approach with the time-share sales pitch disguised as a complimentary cocktail! just tell them you are not interested and they will leave you alone. Overall, we have a good time but would not go back to it! there is a lot of competition in the area and you can get more for you money! Also beware at the airport of the $29 p/p exit tax, and also do not go to Players Club restaurant, it is the biggest ripoff in the world! they posted prices in Colones (CR money) one burger $22 , fries $5, glass of bad wine $9, soda ?, total $65....I am from NYC so we are used to high prices but that is a bad joke! or robbery! .. We went here on our honeymoon in April 2013 and we absolutely loved it! Â The resort is beautiful. Â There is so much to do at the resort and the excursions that they offer were awesome. Â The food is ok (not great but certainly not bad). Â The staff are all so nice, friendly, and very helpful. Â We will definitely be returning for many more vacations!

The Occidental Papagaya was a great all-inclusive hotel... I really had a great stay. However, if you want to go to various places on the resort it requires that you are somewhat physically fit... It's very hilly and the rooms aren't close to the restaurants. The amenities were great and the hotel staff was very accommodating.... Costa Rica was my best vacation yet... Make sure you book your tours with Swiss Travel.... Excellent tour guides. September was an excellent month for travel.
Very Friendly Staff!!!07/17/2012

As a Costa Rica visitor I feel ashamed for all the complaints from "fellow tourists". My wife and I are really happy that we did not pay attention to the "bad" reviews of the Hotel Occidental Grand Papagayo. All the staff were very polite and helpful. Our ocean view room did not have WiFi was the best thing that could have happen to me/us. Checking the Email / Facebook account every 10 minutes does not help having a relaxing vacation. The lobby of the hotel did have WiFi and that was totally fine with us. There were no sellers on the beach annoying the tourists. At 7 am there is a guard watching over the place. Anyway I liked the beach much better than the nicely arranged pool set up. The buffet food was vey delicious and plentiful. There was always a large variety and every dinner had a theme, like Mexican, Caribbean or Oriental. The Oriental and Italian restaurants were excellent!! The snack bar at the pool is open to the environment. Of course it will happen that birds try to get some of the yummy food being served. The staff tries to chase them away, but they just cannot place a food guard with the job of scaring creatures away. What do people think? If they don't like nature, they are free to go indoors and have their breakfast, lunch and dinner behind windows in an air-conditioned space. The rooms are clean and tidy. The guest service is fast and organized. I have just a little criticism. Our mini bar did not get a refill of the tasty Costa Rican Imperial beer. Well, at the grocery store in Coco we got a six pack for 1 dollar. All in all a very nice place to enjoy the vacation. 9 points out of 10! The Costa Rican phrase "pura vida" (pure life) I learned by heart and will be my new motto for the future. Thanks for the experience! Sascha and Rebecca
