The Occidental Papagaya was a great all-inclusive hotel... I really had a great stay. However, if you want to go to various places on the resort it requires that you are somewhat physically fit... It's very hilly and the rooms aren't close to the restaurants. The amenities were great and the hotel staff was very accommodating.... Costa Rica was my best vacation yet... Make sure you book your tours with Swiss Travel.... Excellent tour guides. September was an excellent month for travel.

As a Costa Rica visitor I feel ashamed for all the complaints from "fellow tourists". My wife and I are really happy that we did not pay attention to the "bad" reviews of the Hotel Occidental Grand Papagayo. All the staff were very polite and helpful. Our ocean view room did not have WiFi was the best thing that could have happen to me/us. Checking the Email / Facebook account every 10 minutes does not help having a relaxing vacation. The lobby of the hotel did have WiFi and that was totally fine with us. There were no sellers on the beach annoying the tourists. At 7 am there is a guard watching over the place. Anyway I liked the beach much better than the nicely arranged pool set up. The buffet food was vey delicious and plentiful. There was always a large variety and every dinner had a theme, like Mexican, Caribbean or Oriental. The Oriental and Italian restaurants were excellent!! The snack bar at the pool is open to the environment. Of course it will happen that birds try to get some of the yummy food being served. The staff tries to chase them away, but they just cannot place a food guard with the job of scaring creatures away. What do people think? If they don't like nature, they are free to go indoors and have their breakfast, lunch and dinner behind windows in an air-conditioned space. The rooms are clean and tidy. The guest service is fast and organized. I have just a little criticism. Our mini bar did not get a refill of the tasty Costa Rican Imperial beer. Well, at the grocery store in Coco we got a six pack for 1 dollar. All in all a very nice place to enjoy the vacation. 9 points out of 10! The Costa Rican phrase "pura vida" (pure life) I learned by heart and will be my new motto for the future. Thanks for the experience! Sascha and Rebecca

The first day the air conditioner did not work, the refrigerator did not work and the phone did not work. It took a day to fix the air conditioner and the phone did not work the whole time. We had 17 guests. The list of complaints was quite long. Stayed here before and any problems were fixed when requested. This time I am paying for 17 people and they basically ignored or tried to explain away why the problem could not be fixed. The day before the last day, the room smelled like a sewer and the tv was no longer working and the phone was still not working. They sent someone to spray some deodorant in the room and still did not address the problem with the origin of the smell or fix the phone or the TV, and did not offer to give us another room, knowing we were having all these problems. Also the bus that they take you to your room in, three years ago the flooring in the bus was falling apart and it is now worse than before. The whole time we were there the internet connection barely and rarely worked.

I would read the reviews about this hotel very carefully. The room was very nice. The food was very basic and lunch was extremely disappointing. Lunch was served outside and the food was constantly being dive-bombed by birds and the staff did not do anything to keep birds from eating out of the food. I was very careful about what I ate for lunch. The a la carte restaurant was either asian or italian and the asian menu was your typical asian food, nothing special. Do not try the coffee jello dessert. BE PREPARED to be asked if you want to sit through the time share presentation, "come listen to the time share for a free boat ride (which is a ten minute out and back ride)." The time share presentation will take an entire morning. Also, if you think you are going to have a relaxing time on the beach, think again. As soon as you walk onto the beach, be prepared to be swarmed by people trying to sell you tours, massages, pottery and jewelry. I did not feel safe leaving my beach bag to go into the water. Even if you tell the people to leave you alone, they will continue to ask you to buy things. Stick to the pool. Also, the business center is located in the gift shop and consists of one computer which you will have to pay to use the internet.
