  • "Excellent" is too pale a term for the high praise I have for the Sofia Hotel.

From the moment I entered the stylish and inviting lobby, to the moment the ready and eager staff helped me and my luggage into the taxi they hailed, my experience at the Sofia was uninterrupted joy. The Staff were as helpful as the restaraunt and lounge were delightful. The room was perfectly comfortable, well-appointed and quiet--a decided surprise considering how close the Sofia is to all the sights San Diego has to offer. I have travelled far, over several continents and too many decades, but I have rarely experienced as pleasant and as affordable a stay as the Sofia provided. As my great-aunt was wont to say, "I'll book here again!"

Three of us stayed here in May 2010. The hotel was in a good location close to harbour, transport, restaurant area etc. It was very clean, a bit upmarket. However the room was tiny, and the basin for the bathroom was actually in the entrance way of the room and the bathroom could fit one person at a time just - so for 3 adults with lots of luggage sharing a room it was a tight squeeze! Breakfast was not included, and the restaurant looked quite pricey. I would try somewhere else if I went again.

Found this wonderful, recently totally renovated downtown hotel after being delayed one day due east coast blizzard and 2 terrible nights at a large, more expensive, well known competitor hotel. Sophia is simply charming. Staff is polite, courteous, knowledgable and friendly. Food in hotel restaurant was well prepared and excellent. Easy access to local shops, restaurants and convention center. Local shuttle to/from airport the best deal in town. I had a small room which was great for one person. Recommend one of the larger rooms if traveling with someone. Totally recommend the Sophia.

My boyfriend and I always splurge on a great hotel when we're on vacation. We happily spend a little more for something swanky. This hotel fit the bill. I love the history of the building and how it has been renovated. Naturally, the rooms are quite small, but what they've done with them is very luxurious. We had a corner room with a great view. The bed and bedding were so comfortable we hardly wanted to leave. The staff at the front desk were very friendly with great personality. If you're looking for a great hotel in this location, go for The Sofia.
