We enjoyed our hotel experience here, the room was large and well appointed with a lovely view of St Mary's Cathedral . It was Cherry Blossom Festival time, so we were able to enjoy those festivities. It is a quiet and clean area with excellent Muni transportation only a block away. We certainly recommend it...

Spent 4 nights of spring break here with the hubby and two teenaged boys. Hubby loved the sauna. I loved the bath amenities--the shower was great, too. The beds where extremely comfortable. Got room service one night and the food was good. The hotel restuarant was closed on Monday and Tuesday and since it is in the middle of Japantown, teenage food was not readily available. There is a Japanese grocery down the street that has the basics. Desk staff was kind but couldn't help with everything--concierge service (the bell man and the front desk personel) was inconsistent. The desk staff was usually very busy and there was a wait for service. It's best to plan ahead before you get there. We used a three day MUNI bus pass to get around and saved a bunch of money. There is a bus stop about a block away from the hotel and you can get to just about anywhere, or close to it, if you transfer. If you enjoy walking, there is a slight hill toward Van Ness a few blocks away that has a better connected bus. The hotel walls are VERY thin. We had a crying infant on one side and an amorous couple on the other side--maybe those two sets of guests should have been next door to each other. Good thing the boys' room was across the wall. Went to Minny's across the street for cheap breakfast food--it was perfect for eggs and hash browns. Overall, the hotel was fine. We happened to get a great deal on the rooms but because of the thin walls and weak concierge services I would have been very disappointed if we paid regular rates.

Wonderful Stay

This was our first time in visiting San Francisco and we elected to stay in Japantown where the hotel is located and what a great location it is - quiet neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of the usual tourist areas and walking distance to the lovely shops and cafes in Pacific Heights (Fillmore St up to Union St) Another plus was the abundance of Japanese restaurants just outside of the hotel-it was sushi heaven. The hotel staff were gracious and helpful and the room were clean and comfortable. Within walking distance you can catch a bus along Geary Street for $1.50 to Union Square and even to the Fisherman's Wharf. Also, at walking distance you can pick up the Cable car for $5.00. Although it was a little pricy, it was worth the experience in riding on one.

We stayed at the Hotel Kabuki for 5 days, 4 nights in late October/early November 2008. Reservation said Kabuki King, but I think we were upgraded to a Deluxe View King Room (Rm 1201). The room was clean, comfortable, and dwarfed by the king bed. Bathroom was scrupulously clean, if awkward: The toilet and shower each had their own rooms (closet, really, for the toilet), and the sink was in the room proper, in line of sight from the bed. This means 1)all 3 light fixtures were tied to a single switch, so midnight bathroom trips disturbed other occupants; 2)the shower is really a Japanese soaking tub -- there's no curtain, so showering leaves the floor wet and slippery; and 3)no shower curtain+clear glass door+mirrors around sink leaves nothing to the imagination. Since I was with my SO, this wasn't a problem, but it's something to keep in mind. We also had a small balcony with a lovely view of the hills beyond Post St. Service was friendly, helpful, and quick -- we waited behind maybe one person to check in and out, and the night before we left the concierge even printed our boarding passes. The hotel is in a quiet neighborhood amidst a strip of Japanese shops, groceries and restaurants; eat at Honu's Hawaiian (great lumpia and beer!) but avoid New Minny's (fluorescent runny eggs) in the plaza across the street. There's a bus stop behind the hotel where you can hop a 10- or 15-minute ride to downtown. I found it just close enough to be convenient and far enough to get a good night's sleep. Overall, a great place to lay your head after a day of touring, accommodations and service well worth the (on line website flight+hotel) price.
