This hotel was old and run down. Breakfast was supposed to be a buffet it consisted of two kids of muffins and cereal. Our room could have been nice but it was not. The springs were sticking into my back from the bed the coffee was the worst I think I've ever had. There was water damage everywhere on the floor we were on. A little renovation this would be nice and quaint. BUT, it needs to be renovated.

The Lafayette is a hotel in a residential area just north of Balboa Park. I attended an event in Balboa Park, and the hotel was very convenient. The area has local restaurants close by and is 10 minutes from the main hotel/restaurants on the 8 freeway. The front desk was very efficient and helpful, especially explaining the parking which is in an underground garage. The room although on the small side was quite comfortable and clean with a large sized TV. I would highly recommend this hotel.

We planned our vacation for over a year to have it ruined. When we arrived our rooms were moldy and we wanted to cancel our reservation. They said it was too late- that over 2 hours had passed and we did not notify them in time. We had 13 people with us and here we were stranded, unpacked, and with no place to rest. They offered us other rooms...but why would we want to when the (lack of) staff were so horrible and the rooms were filthy? The pool and the building was under renovations but that was not stated when we booked. We were so frustrated b/c the manager on site refused to talk to us. She walked around and pretended she was not the manager while the clerk sat there and lied to us that the manager was not there. I was so abhorred by this experience as to post it all over my Facebook. We sat in the empty hotel room trying to book another 3 rooms at 11pm. We lucked out and got 3 rooms in another city...and the service there was exceptional (Quality Inn outside of San Diego) and the rooms were sooo clean. JUST PLAIN AWFUL. I never post anything but this was the worst experience for all of us...the kids still remember it as the moldy hotel. DON'T BOOK HERE! I would be happy to send you pics we took while we were in the rooms...

I had read negative reviews about the Lafayette in regards to the rooms being old and out dated. I also read that the hotel had been in the process of renovation. When I booked my room I requested a newly renovated room and I was told the new rooms did not yet have their standard microwave, coffee maker and refrigerator. This wasn't something important to me so I went ahead and booked the newly renovated room anyway. I was pleased to find out that my room did indeed have the microwave, coffee maker and refrigerator. The hotel has free indoor gated parking, which was very nice to have. The newly renovated room was very nice and clean. My only problem is the door into my room was very close to one of the beds and made it sort of crammed when bringing in my luggage. The bathroom was nice but I don't think it was yet completed. The hotel offers a continental breakfast but it was very limited in what it offered. Two types of cold cereal, muffins, coffee and orange juice. Nothing warm or hot. Overall I really liked the stay. The price, location and cleanliness are impossible to beat.

Run down Hollywood sparkle. Exterior rooms dark and musty, strong smell of mold in the one we were allocated. Exchange room although clean and renovated was on par with a Super 8 Breakfast was a joke, Coffee out of a thermos flask and a Muffin supervised by three Hawk nosed attendants. Hotel proper currently under renovation, wake up call to a jack hammer and building dust. All in all an unpleasant place to stay, I and my wife will not be returning.
