The photos are definitely misleading - they make it look very modern and bright. It is a VERY old hotel and that is very evident in all aspects and is not so bright as the pictures seem to show. I didn't see any of the furniture that is shown in any of the photos - lobby, rooms, dining area - have no idea where that was! The breakfast area was in a very dim, minimally lit room - 2 kinds of cereal, 2 kinds of muffins, milk, orange juice and coffee - it was sufficient though. When we first walked into our room, we definitely considered calling Travel agency and reporting it and changing to another hotel - that is was nothing like what was advertised. But we decided to stay and it was fine. We were only in the hotel to sleep and that worked out fine. The beds were old and hard -but many hotels we have stayed at have hard beds so can't judge on that too much. The location was excellent - it was so easy and quick to get to any of the tourist attractions - 10 minutes to get back to our rental car office at 4:00 a.m. so that was nice. We weren't quite sure of the area and neighborhood at first either, but we ended up having no problems or issues at all and everyone we encountered was friendly. Since it was significantly less expensive than a lot of the other hotels and we were only there to sleep, it worked out great. I do think it will be a very grand hotel when and if they get the entire hotel renovated. The pool area and the veranda over looking the pool is gorgeous and that was accurate in the photos.

First off the website is misleading. Pictures very much. This is a very old hotel in need of a major renovation. The first room they put us in the toilet was busted and ran all the time, paint peeling off the walls, comforter had a very questionable smell, Stains all over the ceiling from leaks, and right next to the maids supply room (two hours of noise starting at 7am). So, I asked very nicely if they had a better room. The front desk receptionist must have been use to this sort of request because she took it in stride . . . I am certianly not complaining about the staff at all. However, the next room called the Presidential Jacuzzi Suite . . . I don't think so. Wallpaper falling off the walls, tiles missing aroung the jacuzzi tub (wouldn't use it if i was paid to), the couch looked like it came off the street. We paid around $* a night . . . . this is a $* a night place. And I would give it one star certainly not 3. This place has not been renovated since the 70s from what it looks like to me and not kept up either. No wi-fi so don't expect it. Cable on the old 1990 tv's was shotty at best. Half the channels came in.

I brought my two boys to the Zoo for a weekend. I was shocked at how expensive the hotels in San Diego were and thrilled to find this one so reasonably priced. Upon arival it was clear why the price was so low - the hotel was being redone and the construction noise and dirt was everywhere. The pool was too cold and the room shabby. I hope that when the renovations are done the hotel will be a better place to stay.

Nostalgic older hotel with charm.

I arrived at the front desk and was greeted by two of the staff with smiles and a great attitude. They were eager to give me directions and provided maps and lists of restaurants in the area. My room was nice , the beds were comfortable. The carpets were clean as was the bathroom. My room had a nice clean microwave and mini-fridge. The room also had 2 hairdryers, an iron and ironing board, and a coffee machine -- all were found to be in a "like new" condition. Other than a small lipstick stain on the shower curtain, everything was awesome. The underground parking structure was well lit and had multiple cameras. I felt safe and secure during my 3 night stay.
