We wanted an "older style hotel" in Barcelona and could not have been happier. Our room overlooked a large plaza and cathedral and was easy walking distance to everything we wanted to do. The hotel staff was good at giving recommendations and even helped get our laptop running! They do have a restaurant but it is VERY expensive and there are lots of nice little places to eat within a block or so. I would definitely recommend Hotel Colon and hope to get back there very soon.

I have to admit I was a little grumpy my first hour there. In hindsight, I think it was because I hadn't slept in 24 hours! I was kind of assuming that We might be able to get a room facing the Catedral if one was available. One was available, however it would cost another 40 Euros a night. Since we were going to be there 6 nights, we decided to take the room facing the courtyard at the booked price. It was a good choice. Very quiet, clean and comfortable, with a well stocked mini-fridge @ reasonable prices. There is always a lot of activity going on in the square out front, so it was nice to be in a quiet space for a little while. We didn't eat at the Hotel, but there's a great coffee shop on the corner and an incredible Italian restaurant across the street from the coffee shop. There's a great little bar in the Hotel for a nightcap. The staff was very helpful. WiFi didn't work there for my Tablet. You can hook up direct w/ a laptop and get it. They have a sister Hotel next door, where you can sit in the lobby to get WiFi if your Tablet doesn't have a direct connection. I don't recommend drinking the water. We took a cab from the airport to the Hotel. It seems to be the least hassle free way to get around, if only for the ride of your lifetime! The Gothic Quarter is a great section of town. Barcelona is a gorgeous city that I highly recommend visiting. Just remember, most locals there do not speak very much English and I can't say I blame them. It's their town!

Hotel Colon is in an excellent location. We walked everywhere. Only downside is that the interior is a bit older. Not as modern as other hotels. I think the location makes up for that. There was a large demonstration over the few days we were at the hotel. Being right in Cathedral square made it a gathering place for the demonstrators. We saw lots of police but never felt uncomfortable. Just made if impossible for the taxi to get us to the hotel.

There is nothing like a helpful, classy, courteous staff to make weary travellers feel welcome. They indeed did that for us. It seems like oftentimes, the better the location, the less patient the staff is. However this was NOT the case at Hotel Colon. Although the accommodation probably is overpriced, the location and staff make up for it.
