Location isn’t everything There are plenty of hotels in the area, so location is not part of the criteria for finding what you want. I was traveling to New York with my wife to celebrate one of her landmark birthdays, so I was looking for a hotel a little out of the ordinary, and a hotel built by Randolph Hearst for his mistress, Marion Davis, seemed interesting. After booking, I e-mailed the hotel directly, telling them of the reason for our visit, and asking them for suggestions to help make the trip memorable, and, in particular, for the name of a quality restaurant for the evening of her birthday. The response only named a restaurant. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon, got our room key and went up to the room. It was O.K., except the view was of a brick wall. When I asked for a room with a view, I was told they had already acceded to my request (?) and upgraded us, and this was all they could offer. I had expected one or two extra touches in the room, like a welcoming birthday card, a flower or even a bottle of wine to celebrate the occasion, but, no, there was nothing. The concierge was often not at his post, so we had to wait for his return before getting information or directions, and, even then, he was not very knowledgeable. When we asked for directions to Grant’s Tomb, he tried to look up the address in the telephone directory under ‘T’! The restaurant recommended turned out to be a small Italian restaurant just a few doors up from the hotel, and not at all suitable. On checking out, the manager asked how we had enjoyed our stay, and he was surprised by my response. I, in turn, was surprised that he was surprised, expecting him to know what went on in his hotel. So, all in all, I would not recommend this particular hotel, especially if your visit is for pleasure.

This was our first stay at the Warwick. Upon entering the hotel, we were disappointed. It is a very old hotel and the lobby and elevators need some refurbishing. However, we fell in love with our room (we had the one bedroom suite). It was gorgeous! There was an entrance hall, breakfast table and chairs, large sofa and side chairs, very spacious bedroom, and lovely bathroom. The location is great. You have 5th Avenue and Central Park on one side of you, and the Theatre District and Times Square on the other side. Both are easily in walking distance. We found the hotel staff to be fine, but certainly not exceptional. I would recommend this hotel because of our wonderful room and the location.

My friends and I were delightfully astonished to find ourselves in an elegant suite comprised of a foyer ornamented by a mirror and table set with a lovely Chinese bowl filled with potpourri; a sitting room with sofa, chairs, television, writing desk, and a small dining table; a separate bedroom with two large, luxurious beds, chairs, another television, and a second closet; and a very nice, though smallish, bathroom. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at the Warwick and have every intention of staying there again whenever we visit New York.
