There was three of us traveling for a week in ONE room. When arriving I was very much afraid because of all the bad reviews given by other people. When we arrived the staff was extremely helpful and we ESPECIALLY appreciated the staff opening the door EVERY time we walked in and being helpful. The room we originally chose was a bit small for three ppl-which by the way was in the Catalina so we paid a few dollars more and upgraded to the Dorset which was just next door and was MUCH bigger and classier. Overall the staff was very friendly, we saved a good deal of money because of the hotels free happy hour from 7-8pm. Even though the rooftop pool was under renovations we went up to see what it was like and it was marvelous. There is also another pool located between the Catalina and the Maxine(because they have three different styles of rooms in three different buildings)which was awesome. They had sunbeds, floats, beach towels and outdoor drinks and food. The food was very expensive, but good. Overall for the money we paid this hotel was a DEAL. You get free drinks, free shuttle, beautiful rooms(At the Dorset), friendly staff, right next to the strip. What more could you ask for. Oh yeah and the BONUS was we got 2 nights worth of free shots thanx to the concierge Charlie! Would stay here again in a heartbeat...Oh yeah and the BED speaks loud and clear. I wanted to take that bed home with me.

My husband & I stayed at this hotel over this Labor day weekend (Sep 2009)When we got here, we were told that our room was not ready and that we could get a Deluxe room for an extra $*(1 time fee for 3 nites). We agreed and were assigned a room in the North bldg(above Maxine rest.)The hallway was dingy & smelly (least to say) & so was the room. We went back & complained that this was not acceptable & we were given a corner room on the 2nd floor of the same bldg which happened to be a smoker's room.We felt that this was better than the previous room & opened up the windows to allow circulation of fresh-air.The bathroom is a story of it's own. It is 2*2 ft with an overhead shower. They have a strange arrangement for the shower screen. I initally thought it had sliding glass doors but soon realized that it just a single pane of glass which covers half of the portion allotted to the shower. When you shower the water pours out; i.e no shower curtain or sliding doors to contain the water. So by the time one person is done showering, the next person has to walk through the puddle of water on the floor to get to the shower. To me, this is totally unacceptable & unhygenic. For the money you pay, I guess the hotel should be able to invest in decent shower curtains atleast. Moreover, this has an overhead shower only and you are forced to wash your hair everyday whether you like it or not. Hotel is smelly & dirty. Lobby is not welcoming & staff are not courteous. Not worth the money you shell out. Will never return. Only perks are proximity to the beach & central location.

This was our first time staying at the Catalina, we stood at the Dorset and I was kinda skeptical because some of the reviews that I read on here and on other sites were really putting it down. But I have to say that sometimes u can't go by reviews too much. Sometimes they exaggerate. I really enjoyed my stay there. The staff was very helpful and pleasant and the housekeeping was good too. She came everyday to check if we needed something. It's a decent sized room, yeah the room was a bit dim but it was cozy. The bed was comfortable and the sheets and towels were clean. The pool was nice and the concierge service was great and was very helpful. I would definitely go back again.
