I took my boyfriend down to Miami for his birthday and wanted him to get the full South Beach experience, but I was on a budget. This hotel was awesome!!! It had all the amenities I was looking for in a hotel, the location and the perks were great, and it had the South Beach feel to it. We stayed in the B-room and it was very classy chic. The hotel is not located directly on the beach so you don't really have any views from your room, but we weren't really in the room too much. There are two pools there, but most of the bamboo pool is covered by shade. The rooftop pool was much better and had full bar service. The hotel is directly across the street from the beach so we were given beach towels and chairs for each day we were there, free happy hour at Maxines, free access to bikes and laptops, as well as discount coupons at the sushi restaurant, Maxines for breakfast, and free Starbucks coffee at the Red Bar. This hotel had every thing I was looking for at a reasonable price.

The room: a miscued, faux art deco-retro thing going on with a groovy 1960s ceiling lamp looking for Frankie and Anita. Tile everywhere, so clean. Small? Yep. And? You are in SoBe...duh. Bathroom: spare, functional, clean. Minibar: overstocked, did not work, & very expensive. Meh. There’s a liquor store (or a guy with a bottle of MD 20/20) every 20 paces on Collins Ave. Overall: a comfortable little room for the price. Warning: you gotta know a guy who knows a guy to get ice. The pool: courtyard style with very little sunshine, but clean and well-attended. Check out the bamboo grotto, too! Overall: not a bad for the price. Eats: Did not dine at Kung Fu Panda (or whatever) but if Maxine’s truly horrendously bad service--including built-in “accidental” overcharge for non-existent buffet--is any example, we chose wisely, Grasshopper. The lobby coffee/booze bar: Avoid it if you can. Overall: Go someplace else for caffeine, food and booze. Conclusion: Kitschy-cute, mostly okay for the $$, but “service?”

The Beach Club clearly takes the cake. I came to this hotel to get a change of scene from my monotonous routine and I was more than satisfied. I strolled into the club during the first afternoon of my stay and ran into a gang of cool and friendly girls. I swear it was amazing to be surrounded by a bevy of beautiful females. I felt like a king! Wish I could prolong my stay by atleast another month to spend some more time with the hotties.

Soon after our engagement, my fiancée wanted to go someplace on a vacation. Thankfully, Catalina Hotel had one of the Classic Comfort suites vacant when we made a last moment reservation. The suite was quite spacious and the work desk was a welcome addition, allowing me to stay in touch with office. The clean linen on the bed looked pretty inviting at the end of the days spent at the beach club, just across the street. I had recently recovered from stomach flu, but still loved what little food I ate at the Kung Fu restaurant. In short, a great experience!
