    The view was just facing inward towards the lower roof of the building and the other rooms across from it, so it would have been good to have that noted somewhere so you don't get the impression you'll have a view of the skyline just based on the location. At the check-in and check-out, the staff were not very welcoming. Of course, everyone has an off day every once in a while. The inside of the room was clean enough, but the wallpaper, furniture, and comfort of the bed were all about the same as any chain hotel I've stayed in, or slightly worse since it's a bit older. It was also hard to sleep, since the light was on in the hallway and the door was far enough off the floor to let in enough light to make it harder to go to sleep. The walls are also thin enough that you hear people moving around and talking in the halls, which wouldn't be a problem if they didn't have housecleaning and other personnel walking around the hallways frequently late at night, which again made it difficult to sleep. Lastly, the internet cost $9.50 plus tax every 24 hours. Most hotels offer this free of charge, so I was a little surprised by what seemed like price-gauging. Another example of that was slightly tricky pricing on room service items. There's price, tax, and tip as expected, but then there's a delivery charge on top of that.

    Obviously a popular hotel as it was booked solid. This made it difficult to check in before 3, but they gave me a standard room on an outside corner that was very nice. The hotel is showing some age, but it's quirks and oddities also make it charming. I was fortunate to be attending a conference in the hotel and was blown away by the beautiful room in which I was speaking. This hotel has hidden wonders and the adventurous will find it a great place to stay.

    We got a "lakeview" room, and what a view. We looked down on Buckingham Fountain and out toward the museums and the lake in the distance. The hotel itself has a museum-like quality; it's solid and old-fashioned, with an Art Deco lobby filled with leather couches surrounded by carved marble.

    Faded glory - that might be OK if only money was spent on quality maintenance, and clearly very little has been spent on this building in the last 40 years. What a pity. The charges are far too high for the present quality of the rooms. The wallpaper, carpets, carpentry and state of repair are poor. However, the location is brilliant.
