1st interaction was finding out we had to pay $20 a day to park. That made the price of staying there go up alot. the lobby was nice and the old building (99yrs old) was charming. When we got into the room, it was extremely small. The bed was too firm, I say that nicely, or both of our backs. We would not stay there again based on our experience.

  • Can't beat the value for the heart of downtown.

I was pleasantly surprised of the location after blindly choosing the hotel. The hotel has an old fashioned elevator that you must operate. The doors are very heavy, so unless you have very strong muscles, you'll be taking the stairs. The hotel is very quaint but clean. Has a rooftop terrace which I didn't get a chance to enjoy but the view is awesome. The room was extremely small. Book a room with 2 beds for more space. It had all of the necessities and served it's purpose. Most people staying downtown will not spend much time in the room. Hotel was very quiet. A restaurant is attached to hotel. Seemed to be quite popular. The staff was very friendly but not very familiar with travelocity booking. I was double billed for the room and had to contact accounting to correct the error. It was still not corrected as of three business days after my departure. Again, it was great for the value. The bed was too firm for my preference but may be great if you like firm mattress.

If you don't want to spring for the high prices of Gaslamp hotels, this old but well kept hotel is a good alternative. It's comfortable, well located and the rooms are in good shape. There's a 24 hour restaurant attached that serves huge good reasonably priced breakfasts. You also have the opportunity to visit the hotel's roof terrace to see a view of the city and have a close up look at the hotel's big sign which is something of a local landmark.

  • The staff was very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is an old building, keep that in mind. The carpet was clean and so was the room. The biggest problem was the hot water. It was constently changing during your shower. I would be afraid to have a child use it. The outside noise was loud ( but that should be expected for the area the hotel is in) We turned the airconditioner on at night and it helped with the noise.
