Not a bad hotel, but they should ask for their money back from their architect -- the lighting is absolutely the worst I've ever seen -- all indirect, except for recessed lights over the bed and a low-wattage task light over a very small table. Only place to read is on the bed. It's obviously designed for a romantic getaway, but not for anything practical. Impossible to apply makeup or shave in the bathroom. Finally gave up and moved everything to the bedroom area, opened all the drapes and applied my makeup as close to the window as I could get. On a cloudy morning, even this didn't work. Though we arrived at the hotel after the check-in time, only one of our rooms was ready. They put a rush; on getting the second room ready and said they would send up a key with a bellboy. The key never arrived. As we were leaving the hotel for dinner that night I stopped by the front desk -- sure enough they'd forgotten about me. The beds were comfortable, but only dressed with a bottom sheet and a duvet. This arrangement probably works well in the winter, but I had to crank the air conditioning down to 50 to keep from sweltering under the duvet in July. The place was clean and the bell staff was exceptional -- friendly and extremely helpful. Desk staff was just the opposite. If management took a clue from the bell staff, and also improved the lighting, this could be a great hotel. It's not quite there yet.

Online it looked like a fun and out of the ordinary place to stay. After 5 days and 6 nights there, my wife and I wished we had booked something traditional. The most important aspects of a hotel for vacationers are the bed and the bathroom, and Donovan House fails in both areas. The bed was so hard that both of us had sore backs and legs ( I spent the last night in a chair), and the pillows were so thin that we wound up requesting 4 additional ones just to try to get some head support. The design of the shower causes the bathroom mirror to get foggy, making it almost impossible for 2 people to use the bathroom at the same time. Two dollars a cup for in-room coffee - c'mon, even Motel 6 has complimentary coffee. You can only get ice by calling room service, so that costs you tip money. We couldn't use the rooftop pool and bar at night because it was booked for private parties. The only real positive is the staff, who were all very friendly and helpful.

This hotel was fantastic! It is within walking distance of just about everything including the monuments and plenty of restaurants. Georgetown is just a quick cab ride away. The service was spectacular as was the room. The staff was amazing; greeting us coming and going. This included the lobby, door guy and valet service. My only suggestion is that these hotels provide free wireless access. I think it makes more sense to increase the price of the room by $ than to ask me to pay for wireless service these days!!
