The Hotel Whitcomb was truly a marvelous place, from the time you walked into the lobby to the walk down the hall to your room you are transported to another time. You can actually imagine the San Francisco of old. The staff was friendly and helpful. The doorman gave wonderful advice about the area and the desk staff were courteous and checked us in quickly. Our room was clean and the bed was wonderful. Unfortunetly I cannot say the same about the bathroom. I understand the historic quality of the hotel, what I don't understand is the turn of the century toilet. My husband is disabled and it was a nightmare for him to have to use that toilet, and the shower was awful, no omph. My only real complaint besides the bathroom would be the parking situation. Come on folks $28.00 bucks a night and my vehicle never even made it into the garage, it was parked in the ally. For what we paid in parking would have bought another nights stay in the hotel. I probally wouldn't be quite as irate if all the parking in the area was competitive, but the Hotel Whitcomb parking was the highest. We would of probally parked elsewhere but all the reasonable parking lots were full. I would probally stay there again, but my husband says ABSOLUTELY NOT!!

We stayed her in May and has a great visit. The hotel is a grand Lady, rich with historicl architectural detail and great staff. The beds are nicely appointed and comfortable. Location is good...easy hop on the F-Line to the Wharf area, short walk to Trolly car. Taxi rides to North Beach, Haight Ashbury around $10 with tip.

DO NOT stay here!!

Sure, it looks like a great deal to stay here b/c of the price and how it's downtown and that it's in the middle of everything, but I must warn you that you better just get your money's worth and stay somewhere else. When you first walk in, it does look nice, but there are very few staff that does check-ins and so we were waiting for an hour before we could check in. They didn't even give us a copy of our receipt! So when we walked into our room, we noticed there was a moldy type of smell, the carpet is really old and dirty, and the room is quite small. The bathroom is really dirty. The bottom of the bathtub is stained at the bottom, the toilet is on this pedestal type platform so if you are unsteady on your legs, you could fall. And also, when you flush, you have to reach behind and flush using your hands since it's in the back like that. There are limited towels and they tend to be torn. You can also hear when the neighbors flush their toilet and one particular toilet will make a loud bang at the end that sounds like a gun shot. At night, you can hear whenever someone is walking through the halls. It's like 10X amplified or something so it was very hard to sleep during the first night. Bugs are flying around and the power outlets are really lose and there are only like a couple of them in the room and there are homeless all around the outside area. Let me warn you to not buy the most expensive bus tour from the hotel. These bus tours don't even check your tickets. Save your money and buy the cheapest ones!

I stayed here in October of 2008 and plan on coming up again in October 2009, they charge a lot to park your car ($30 bucks) in the hotel parking garage, it's best if you can just take a shuttle to the airport instead of a rent a car in San Francisco if your not planning more than walking a few blocks to Pier 39 and China Town. The service staff was excellent, bed was ok, there is a starbucks in the lobby, I suggest eatin across the way as there are some excellent restaurants as you are in the heart of San Francisco. Everything is within 6 blocks and you can split a taxi with friends. The room was clean, they try for lavish decor but it comes out like every moderate priced hotel. High Ceilings, if you had never stayed in an urban hotel, the room size will be a shock to you. There is always a doorman at the front, the meeting rooms need a little more sound proofing as sometimes they can be loud if someone is in the next room. I think for the price it wasn't bad.
