I just want to say that my experience at the Hotel Whitcomb couldnt have been better. The staff and everything while I was there excellent. The staff was really helpful with questions that I had and the room was perfect. Everything was clean and fresh during my stay. The hotel itself is amazing. It was like stepping back in time with its decor. Their computer room could use an update though. We tried using the computer's and took forever for the windows to download. But other then that our stay was excellent. I would rate it at least a 4 in the star's rating. The location is fine. Just ignor some of the patriots that walk around the area outside the hotel. But your within walking distance to everything. When I come back to San Francisco, which is soon in the future, I will be staying with this hotel again.

The Whitcomb is a perfect place to stay if you know the city and don't want to spend too much. It's very classy with a grand hotel look, the rooms are small but beautiful, the location can't be beat--right on the BART from the airport and central to the city. And the staff are very professional. This is where I will be staying from now on. My only suggestion is that the registration people might consider offering to print boarding passes for those staying at the hotel--like they do in Vegas. We were told we had to pay $* to use the computer in the cyber room. So we didn't, and it took us a bit longer at the airport. This little added service would be very handy and make them look sophisticated. Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing.

My stay at The Hotel Whitcomb in San Francisco was in January. The room I stayed in was a little on cold side. Plus the blankets on the bed were thin. By this I mean that the room was cold and my blankets didn't keep me warm when I slept. Not good. In my room, #563, the wallpaper is coming off the walls. Really. I even took a picture of the walls to send to my wife, kinda as a joke, as in "Baby look, cold room, thin blankets and the wallpaper is coming down...hahaha." I know it isn't nice, but it is true. Also, there was no coffee machine in the room. I may be spoiled with stays at a chain hotel, but I do like having the option to make my own coffee in the morning. A free continental breakfast is also a nice option. The Hotel Whitcomb did not offer this option. (If they did, I did not see it offered, forgive me if I am mistaken here) I want to end this review with something positive. The concierge services were excellent. My super shuttle service to SFO airport was promptly placed with ease and efficiency. My check in and check out were effortless and the staff were efficient. Finally, free WiFi is always a welcome deal closer for me, and their WiFi was user friendly and fast enough. (not blazing, but fast enough)

Overall a good hotel in a central location. It is old but well maintained, the room was a little small but still big enough. The shower was good. The bed was a queen its comfort was just acceptable, I did sleep well. Its location on Market St. provides easy access to all of San Francisco's transportation, in some ways the best feature of the hotel. Chinatown, Union Square and Japan Center are all an easy walk away. To get to Fisherman's Wharf take the F train just outside the hotel on Market no transfers needed. The Bart passes right by the hotel, its underground so you can't hear it but the entrance to the Bart is less the 20 feet from the entrance to the hotel. Getting from the hotel to the plane means walking a couple of hundred feet, most of which are in the airport. Service, we did not spend much time in the hotel, but what little interaction with the staff we had was all first rate, top marks for service. Soft drinks from vending machines in the hotel are $*, total fail on this point. Wifi was available in the room, but somewhat slow, I was not able to download photos to Facebook, timed out every time; email and web surfing worked. There is a Starbucks and a fancy restaurant in the hotel, the Starbucks is like every other Starbucks, did not try the Restaurant though it would have been the most expensive place we ate it we had, (and we had two meals over $* elsewhere).

The Whitcomb is old but updated very quiet nearly vacant when we stayed. room was large one king bed. Good mattress. But here is the deal transportation to hotel from airport is simple BART station across the street and bus and cable car stops are 200 yards from the front door. Which is good because neighborhood is rough for about 4 blocks. we had no problems but you will see homeless and panhandlers. Staff was fine, didnt eat at restaurant but appears nice. Overall if u are an adventurer or experianced traveler looking for reasonable rates this will work ,if not, you need closer to the union plaza. we had a great time in San Francisco.
