Stayed here for a short 5 day/4 night stay. Wanted to get away and warm up after a cold winter. The staff was friendly. It is close to Fremont St. It was fairly inexpensive. That was the positives. The airconditioner just would not cool down the room past maybe 74 or so. The pool was not open. I had no housekeeping after my first night. It is definately geared towards their travel customers from Hawaii. It is showing some wear and tear and is in need of a little rehab. I just was in Vegas maybe 5 weeks ago if that and was on the strip. On my shuttle ride back to the airport I was with a couple of folks that had stayed both downtown and on the strip. We were split as to where is better to stay. I think there are downtown people and strip people. Fremont is fine, just in smaller doses. I know this is about the hotel but I have to add this in there. NEVER EVER fly Spirit airlines. The upfront pricing is not that great and they stick you for every little thing, bags (of course), your seat, even a glass of water in flight. If you do not arrange before you get to the gate for your carry on bag.....100 bucks per bag. OUCH!!!!

When we go to Vegas, we like to stay on the strip or at a hotel thatâs on the monorail line. This trip the convention we were attending was at an off-strip hotel. Since we were going to need a car anyway, we decided to try one of the downtown hotels. The California Hotel and Casino sounded very good. The location was ideal, the reviews were good, the price was great and it had the amenities that we like so we thought weâd give it a try. We are very glad we did. For the most part the hotel is wonderful. The location is great; itâs close to the Fremont Street Experience and a walkable distance to several other casinos and restaurants. The food was excellent, especially Pirate Pasta. The people are some of the nicest weâve run into. The waitstaff, bartenders and guards were friendly and helpful. I even won $50 in the slot machines. Why am I marking this as 4 smiley faces? There were some serious flaws with our room. When we checked in, the room didnât seem âfinishedâ. There was a roll-away bed in the room that we didnât request and the usual coupons and hotel information were missing. The air conditioning didnât work right and, in August, thatâs a problem. The temperature in the room was over 80 degrees, but since it was after midnight, we decided to deal with it the next morning. In the morning we stopped at the front desk to ask that someone fix the air conditioner and we were assured that theyâd see to it. They didnât. We got back to our room late; nobody had been in the room, including housekeeping. The room was still 77 degrees and very uncomfortable. The beds were unmade and the towels where we left them. It was too late to call maintenance and then wait for someone to come to the room. By the next morning, the temperature was down to 75 degrees and we decided that we could live with it that way for another day. Weâll give the California Hotel and Casino another try the next time we go to Vegas. Itâs not fancy but itâs a nice place to stay. Itâs clean and has a great location. Its best asset is its people. They are all friendly and helpful. Weâre hoping the problems we experienced are a one-time issue and look forward to trying the hotel again.
