With a package deal of flight and hotel, I found that the price was doable for my first trip back to The City in about ten years. I arrived at the Mark Hopkins on Sunday about 10:30 am and by luck was able to check into an available room and didn't have to wait 'til afternoon. The room was large and spacious, with 2 closets, a large bathroom with tile, scale, make up mirror. The bedroom area had a chair and ottoman, large desk and kingsized bed. They DO CHARGE for internet access, as I guess a lot of upscale hotels do. 12.95 per day. I opted to stay off the internet. Bottled Evian is available in room for 6.50 a bottle. The tap water in SF tastes fine, thank you. History is important, and I'm an antique dealer, so that's great for me. There is a small 'Museam of the Mark' in the lobby explaining the history of the hotel. I'm a very distant niece of Mark Hopkins, so that was neat. Had drinks at the Top of the Mark, and that was fine. Too bad they took out the old bar. Breakfast is up there, too, and WATCH OUT! I knew it would be a tad pricey, but 18.50 for ""Lighter Fare"" of juice, coffee and two bread choices. Want the works? That will be close to 30.00. Lobby restaurant is closed. Enjoyed my dinner across the street at the legendary Tonga Room, (think Tiki!) in the Fairmont Hotel. The public areas of the Fairmont were FABulous. Hope to stay there in the future before it goes condo, as it is rumored to do. My room at the Mark was on the 2nd floor and even though I could hear the cable cars, I slept great!

We stayed at the Mark Hopkins over Easter weekend this year and we loved it!!! The Hotel is beautiful, very charming and the rooms were comfortable. The locations was awesome--walking distance to Union Square and cable cars right outside of the hotel. I thought the parking fee was Outrageous!!!! $50. a day to park--try to find a lot. Otherwise, a great experience.

  • Wonderful experience; noisy neighborhood

The Mark Hopkins is a classic, must-stay hotel that has been thoroughly modernized. Unfortunately, the lower floors are especially subject to street noise, which is considerable, since the hotel is located at the juncture of two cable car routes. You are likely to hear police sirens during the night. The Top of the Mark is legendary, but there are more attractive hotel view lounges with better views and larger windows.

I have stayed at many top hotels and would put the Mark Hopkins in my top two. Quiet, clean, lovely rooms. Staff was very helpful with inquiries and assistance when needed. We ordered room service once, the meal was prompt, delicious, and beautifully presented. I even took photos for my trip albumn! Would definately book again. The only deficit was that I had to cross the street to another hotel to find a coffee shop. People staying at this local should take advantage of the beautiful park one block away. I enjoyed morning coffee and paper while watching tai chi, dogs excercising, and children playing, what a joy!

We stayed in SF for one night and the room, though small, was clean, had a view and appropriately priced. The location was great with an easy walk to Union Square and other areas. We anticipated the service to be good, but was beyond our expectations with being helpful after having left some items in a cab that had dropped us at the hotel. When we return to SF definitely will choose Mark Hopkins for our stay.
