Our recent stay was quite a disappointment. The service needs improvement. $*/day per guest to use the fitness center is outrageous. Waiter in the Oak Room argued with us over an iced tea (brewed vs. bottled). While the location is great for Union Square shopping, the Westin St. Francis is not worth the price.

This wonderful old hotel, rich with history and the stopping-place of yesteryear's celebrities, is fully modernized and quite attractive. We had a fine view from our window of all the goings-on in Union Square. Staff was anxious to please. Our purchased stay was for 2 nights short of our final intentions (my error), and the reservations department said we couldn't extend it because the hotel was full, but a very accommodating desk clerk checked with the management and got us the extra 2 nights at a very favorable rate. The hotel dining is excellent, with the in-house branch of Michael Mina's renowned seafood restaurant being nothing short of superlative (but, $$$$!).

For all the grandeur and lavish public areas, we could not have had a smaller room. Housekeeping knocks at 8 AM sharp. Put the "do not disturb" sign out the night before. We brought in a bottle of our own wine and used the hotel supplied wine glasses which disappeared the next day. We stayed three nights; thefirst day there were two packets of regular coffee and one decaf for the in-room coffee maker, second day two packets of decaf and one regular, third day the same as the first. 3 small Minimoos is all you get. It seems that such a luxurious hotel should have larger rooms an more generous amenities. The bill for an adequate but ordinary buffet breakfast in the Oak room was $* for two. Try the buffet at the Palace Hotel instead.
