This hotel is in the heart of it all. It's quite busy and you can hear sirens and the trolley car outside at all hours. If you have small children or are looking for a quiet retreat, another location may be better. The trolley outside the door seems convenient, but it's so busy that you end up having to wait in line at Market street to get on. I would recommend this hotel to adults without children and those that will be out at night. If you are looking to be close to the tourist attractions I would stay at Fisherman's Wharf instead.

My wife and I stayed here on November 4-6 for the weekend to celebrate my wife’s birthday. I picked this hotel because of its location and based on the reviews. The hotel staff is real nice and the hotel itself is great, however, the rooms are very small. We were shocked that a hotel like this has small rooms. We booked a King size room however it felt the room was a double very small and the bathroom itself was huge. There was no view as the windows faced the other hotel room. For the money I spent and being a surprise to my wife, it was a letdown. We did call the front desk to have shifted t o another room however they were charging us a fee if we did that. I don’t think I will stay here again as there are other good hotels in the same area that offer more for the money. The internet is not free here, we had to pay $10 to use it and to print one page of paper costed us $3

I have stayed at the St. Francis multiple times, and each and every time it exceeds my expectations. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the rooms are beautiful and clean, the beds are comfy with high thread count sheets and nice bedding, and the views are incredible! I have stayed in both the old section an the new section, and they are equally nice. Being in Union Square is great - you are close to Chinatown, Lombard St., a ton of shopping, and more. There is a cable car stop right out front, and if you need a cab there are always some waiting. This trip my daughter accidentally left her Nintendo DS in the room - they're mailing it back for us immediately! I will always choose the St. Francis when traveling to San Francisco!

When we checked in, we asked for the "newer updated section" & I was very dissappointed in the size of the room. The decor was nice & new but the room was the smallest hotel room I have EVER stayed in. My Father in law was also staying here and he was in the "older section". I was shocked by how much nicer those rooms were. We changed our room within 24 hours without any problems. The older rooms are HUGE with 17 ft ceilings & walk in closets. The decor is obviously dated but who cares when you have 300sq ft vs a 75sq ft (just my estimate). There were no amenities to speak of. They charge you $15p/day for internet, the drinks and food was very overpriced. They dont even offer a complimentary shuttle service or discounts for transport to the BART (SF subway system). The hotel does have the best location, right across the street from Union Square.
