Location: What I like best about his hotel is its location. As a first-time visitor to Washington D.C., I felt obliged to first visit the National Archives, White House, and at least a few of the various monuments and memorials. The Holiday Inn Capitol is within walking distance of all of these (the Lincoln Memorial being a little further away by the water--probably 25-30 minutes on foot and at a moderate pace). The hotel is also close to the subway--about 1.5 blocks away from the L'Enfante Plaza Station. There is also a CVS located two doors down (to the right)--go here for toiletry items and water or some snacks, but not for prescription medicine; there is no pharmacy at this CVS. The only "complaint" I'd have of its location would be its distance from restaurants. Other than the two or three restaurants inside the hotel itself, the only food options are Starbucks (next door), McDonald's (out the door, to the right, down the block), and a little coffee shop (I did not try the food here, so can't say whether it was any good). Service: I was pleased with the service of the staff at this hotel, first and foremost because I was allowed to check in to my room 9 hours early. I took a red-eye flight in and went straight to the hotel, hoping they'd let me check in a little early (say, at 1 pm instead of 3 pm). I had barely started speaking when the clerk behind the desk said, with a smile, "Let me see if we have a room available for you. now. We do." To someone exhausted from a cross-country flight, this was an enormous relief. Room service, the two times I ordered it, was also prompt...both times within 15 minutes of placing the order.

Our family of four had never been to the east coast and knew nothing other than what family and friends kind of filled us in about. We knew that most of the action took place around the mall and so I felt it would be important to get close. When I first started looking for properties, it became very apparent that I was going to have to change my criteria some as most all rooms were starting at $200+ and up. At a week, this was going to be a pretty good chunk of change. When I found the Holiday Inn Capitol, instead of being quite pleased with the room rates I began questioning why this property was so much lower than all the others near the mall and that this property looked to be off the beaten path some. Over more research, reviews and whatever else I found on the property, I did end up booking our family of four at the Holiday Inn Capitol for our seven day stay. Upon our arrival, while the lobby appeared to be quite active the front desk staff were wonderful in our welcome. While we knew that we were in earlier than check-in, the hotel made accommodations to have our baggage stored in the back room so we could go out and get familiar with the area around us. Upon our return we were very pleased to know that the property was only two blocks off the mall and from there everything seemed easy to get to. We went up to our room where it was nothing out of the usual for a two queen hotel room but it was very clean which pleased my wife greatly. The room offered free internet which made our two 20 year olds very pleased to be able to stay in touch with everyone back home. The room had a very nice refrigerator and microwave so we did purchase some beverages and food for our stay and that worked well. The bellman was very helpful in arranging cabs and directions for us and well as some extra bits of information that was useful. The property has a pool on the roof which both of our children used a fair amount and enjoyed. We ate a couple of times at the restaurant in the hotel and found the food to be pretty good but a bit to over priced- but that would probably be the case with most hotels with restaurants. The snack bar on the other hand was the craziest of anything to figure out. There were times that we went through believing it was open and it wasn't which happened 2-3 times and then the one time we did catch it open after lunch, we choose to eat items off the wall menu only to find out that all they were selling was beverages; in fact, the checker even asked the cook it he would make some sandwiches and he said no. Weird. Over-all, the Holiday Inn Capitol was really the best part of our trip as it exceeded all our expectations and really made us feel welcome to the area. I will always recommend the Holiday Inn Capitol to anyone I know or that asks as it set the tone for the best family vacation we have ever taken.

This Holiday Inn was fine. It was clean and safe. I loved the proximity to the Smithsonian Museums and the Metro Station. It offered complimentary internet. I would probably suggest eating outside the hotel. I did not enjoy paying $30.00 to park overnight.
