The overall experience was average. the cleanliness was great as well as the staff, and although cheap so was the quality.

Let's go with the good first: Location is excellent. Right in the heart of the French Quarter, but a little down from Bourbon St. so that we didn't hear much noise at all (although I suspect during Mardi Gras that is not the case). We had gotten a pretty good deal online for the room and the price was right compared to other hotels in the area. Second: The staff was great. Accomodated our requests quickly and efficiently. Third: Housekeeping was very diligent and kept our room tidy. The bad: When we first arrived in the evening, we were given a room on one of the upper floors. We took the old slow elevator up, walked into a dark little room that was incredibly musty and moldly smelling. My boyfriend wanted to check out of the hotel immediately, it was so bad. We went downstairs and the desk clerk was polite and found us another room right away in another building next door that houses 8 other rooms (all room #'s were in the 600's over there). We were shown through a little courtyard to a room with old double doors and an exposed brick wall inside and high ceilings. The building was extremely old, but had lots of character and none of the musty smell, so we stayed. The room ended up being fine for our needs. If you like a very nice room with lots of natural light, then the St. Marie is not for you (unless you get a balcony, I guess, but it was freezing in February). The carpets/furnishings are old and dated, but I think you expect everything to be old in New Orleans. There's a breakfast spread with danishes and coffee/juice in the morning and the staff were all perfectly accomodating. Having only seen the 1 awful room in the main hotel, I would recommend trying to get a room in the 600's if you stay, but some people seem to have had good luck with the others
