I orginally booked this room thru web, when I landed in SF I had a voice mail from web that said the hotel was full and they would not accomodate my reservations. After numerous calls to web and complaints we were given a room. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The first afternoon we were relaxing in our room and the room beside us was given to a very rude family with children screaming at the top of their lungs and throwing things. The family was extremely rude and loud. We asked to be moved and Hotel Carlton moved us right away to another room. This hotel does not have air conditioning in the rooms so we had to sleep with the windows open. Never again will I get a hotel in San Francisco close to downtown. All night long we heard people on the streets yelling, cursing, gun fire, and sirens-all night long! I had to come home to get some rest. If you stay downtown, take earplugs!

As soon as we entered through the lobby door we were treated like royalty! What a wonderful experience -our only complaint was that we couldn't stay longer! (and the other front desk gentleman - can't remember his name) couldn't have been more accommodating. They made several arrangements for us, one for a tour of the city as well as rental car reservations. We had no worries. We loved the free wine reception each night. They had a musician playing lovely music to "sip" by. The bellman couldn't have been pouring any quicker, he did a marvelous job making sure everyone's thirst was quenched. After traveling for 20 days prior this was our favorite room - we loved the location. High up on the 7th floor and a great corner room with a window on each side - we were able to open the windows and get a wonderful cross breeze as well as a veiw down each side of the street. Great to hear all those city noises during the night. The bed was comfy and the room in general was clean, fresh smelling and even had a flat scree TV! Although we didn't utilize their lobby copumters, they offered the use of two large screen monitors with a printer if surfing the web was needed during your stay. We loved the old fashioned elevators with the exterior door in addition to the elevator door. The lobby atmospher was very relaxed. Daily newspaper and various magazines were on the coffee table infront of an ever going fireplace and a comfy couch and chair. If we ever venture back to San Francisco again we will definately give Theo and his crew a call to schedule our stay with The Hotel Carlton!

Parking was awful. There is no self-parking, and they charged $*/day. They charged nearly $* on my card the moment we checked in, $* for a deposit and $* for the next day for parking if you were still there. Of course you will get the money back but you're out $* for a few days. The rooms had no A/C and it was a little warm. If you leave your window open during the evening expect to stay awake because of the constant sirens blaring and horns honking. The walls are thin due to the age of the building, so you can hear the neighbors TV, also, the lack of vending machines was a little rough. Despite the negatives, I must say the staff was very nice, and the decor of the hotel was pleasant. The room and bathroom was very clean. But I wouldn't stay again, not worth the money spent.

My family( 5 of us) stayed at the Hotel Carlton for 5 nights in March. We loved it!! The staff went out of there way to assist us with all of our needs. Each time we went to the front desk they remembered our names and would greet us with a smile. My Dad got sick(flu) while we were there and the hotel staff including the maid went out of their way to ask about him. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms and lobby clean. Try the restaurant on the property, it is worth it. We will return to Hotel Carlton on our next visit to San Francisco.

We stayed March 11 - 13, 2010 The staff were extremely friendly and they all had a great sense of humor...which made it especially nice. All the guests are invited to a wine social in the lobby every evening. It gave you a chance to meet new people and that was a plus. The only drawback was the front desk controlled the heat in all the rooms. My room got a little chilly in the evening. When I inquired at the front desk about turning up the heat, they brought me a space heater. It kept the room plenty warm. It was a great place to stay and I would certainly stay there again.
