Having just arrived from an NY hotel with cold receptionists, we had a great reception courtesy of Theo, who was very friendly and informative, providing us with a map, places to go, places not to go etc. In terms of location, it is about six to seven blocks from Powell St, which is walkable for us, but not recommended if you are dealing with luggage, or if you're not in good shape. We immediately noted the good cheer in the staff, which made a stark contrast to our NY stay. Everyone always tried to crack a joke or two, and was very helpful. Except for when we were trying to leave, where we asked them to help us get a taxi to get to the nearest BART to catch a train to our friend's place. Whilst they suggested our friend should come get us, I never got a clear response as to whether they called us a taxi or not - they said they did, but at the same time the attendant tried to flag some down, trying to be funny at the same time - after a while he just disappeared and we were left outside by the street, wondering whether we should wait for the taxi they might have called for us or hail our own taxi down. In the end I hailed my own taxi down (needed to be big as we had 6 pieces of luggage). The building itself is a refurbushed building, note that THERE IS NO AIR CONDITIONING. This means that you will need to leave the windows open which extrapolates to constant sirens late at night and early in the morning. I would not recommend this to a light sleeper. Other than that, everything else is satisfactory, the location is convenient for the typical traveller, public transport is nearby and we felt rather safe aside from meeting a few bums (just avoid). Internet is free which is a plus.

I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. I was in town for the Nike Women's Marathon and wanted to find something that was close to Union Square. This beatiful hotel accommodated my request for two double beds and welcomed my father without any problems since he arrived before I did. After flying across the country, all I wanted was a steaming hot bath and a good night's sleep. The Hotel Carlton delivered! The beds were comfortable and cozy, the front desk was extremely helpful and even recommended a great place for an Italian dinner - L'Ottavo. The streets weren't too noisy and we kept our bags securely at the hotel after we checked out while visiting Alcatraz in the morning. The front desk even printed my reservation confirmation for me when I ran back inside in a panic after the Super Shuttle driver demanded that I had verification of the reservation. I highly recommend this hotel and would stay there again in a heartbeat!

The hotel lobby and all the employees were very nice. The rooms were small and the walls very thin, I even heard the alarm go off in the next room. It was clean and comfortable, but very expensive and not in the best part of town, (do not take a left leaving the hotel).
