Worst Big-City Hotel I've Ever Stayed At

First negative review I've ever left for any restaurant or hotel. The Mayflower was the worst major metro area hotel I've ever been to. The internet did not function in my room. I called repeatedly to resolve the problem and was stonewalled by everyone with whom I spoke -- from the hotel manager to the desk clerks. After I was given the run around by three staff members, someone eventually told me to contact their internet service provider -- yes, they told the convention-attending guest to do this (presumably because their staff had better things to do than, you know, make sure that they were able to provide the contracted-for services). I called the service provider (whose rep was very helpful), and we determined there was a router problem. The internet service provider "escalated" the problem to management. Management never called me to follow up. I returned from dinner, found the internet still wasn't working, and called the front desk. The manager told me he was sorry and that he would transfer me -- at 10:30 p.m.! -- to another room. I declined his offer. No one has ever accused me of being sensitive about customer service; for the most part, I think you get what you pay for. But this hotel stay was a nightmare. Through the whole ordeal, I was made to feel like I was being unreasonable for making a very simple request. I had work to do, and required a good internet connection. I am leaving the review because everyone at this place was singularly uninterested in helping me. Really bad place. It's a Motel6 experience at a (near) Ritz-Carlton price. To top it all off, after I called the second time (to fix THEIR problem), they disabled my phone such that I couldn't call their Guest Services number. No joke. I swear to you-know-who that I was 100% civil throughout the experience. Oh, and one more thing: I have a dietary restriction and the hotel staff member who was handing out lunches at the convention told me to take a lunch from one table because it was in line with my dietary restriction. I found out he was wrong -- but only by biting into the sandwich!!!

I booked a room at the Mayflower based on its proximity to my meeting. The location is excellent; there are many good restaurants just a block or two away, and it is a short walk to many DC landmarks. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I have two complaints about my stay. First, the room was very small and crowded. The doors to the wardrobe literally touched the bed when open, which made getting into the drawers a pain. Second, although wireless internet is available it was very unreliable and dropped frequently. The desk did have a wired connection, but it was in a cramped alcove where the back of the chair rested against the air conditioner. That being said, the room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. I would consider staying here again, but I would definitely speak to them first about getting a larger room.
