My wife and I just got back from a trip to NYC to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and unfortunately have to list the Waldorf Astoria as the only source of disappointment for the whole trip. Before anything else, I would like to say that I did my research and even read the hotel reviews before finally deciding to stay at the W.A. I already expected that the hotel was getting old and needed some updates...I actually liked that aspect of it because it gave the hotel a sense of history that the newer hotels don't have. To continue, we arrived at the Waldorf at around 10 PM (missed flight) and was told that the non-smoking room that i requested was not ready for reasons that the hostess didn't tell me. After clicking around on her keyboard for about ten minutes, she informed us that she needed to go find the manager to get his signature....for reasons that she didn't tell me. This took about fifteen minutes until she finally came back to tell us that she found a room for us but we'd have to wait another fifteen minutes for them to make sure that the room is ready. (She did give us two drink vouchers to use while we waited). The whole check-in process took about 45 minutes. When we finally got our room keys and sent to our room on the 6th floor, we opened the room door and was immediately hit with the smell of old cigarette smoke. I called downstairs to confirm that this was indeed a non-smoking room and was assured that it was. The person I talked to offered to send somebody up to freshen up our room to get rid of the cigarette smell. I do not believe that the room we were given is a non-smoking room due to the fact that even the closets smelled of smoke. I don't like being lied to. Another issue that we didn't like was the showers that had a very weak water pressure and hot water that wouldn't stay hot. It took a fine, calibrated hand to get the shower to stay luke-warm. Lastly, the room was just not very clean. We've stayed at many hotels in different countries....I wouldn't want to lay down on the carpet in this room. For a hotel in this price range, I expected a lot more. Obviously, I wouldn't stay at the Waldorf-Astoria the next time we visit NYC and definitely wouldn't recommend that you do either. One positive thing about the W.A. is its central location which made it walking-distance to just about anywhere.

Concierge services at all times of the day and for varying activities was spectacular - great restaurants recommended as well as site seeing options. Few issues with room - having coffee pot in room was a major chore - had to call everyday and then some days they left pot but didn't leave coffee - then one day there was no coffee available. Also clarity on wireless availability didn't indicate common areas only - had to go to lobby area to get connections. Bar service was charged as some items were moved to allow for refrigerating our personal items but corrections were made at checkout when we explained the situation.
