    It was a classic old hotel in a great part of town for our purposes. It has aged gracefully but not quite kept up with some other classic hotels with lots of updates. However, that said, it was a good value for the money and since we were on our own dime (no company travel reimbursement) we enjoyed the value, the old charm and location

    Although this is one of the older hotels in the south loop it is centrally located across the street from Grant Park. There are views of the lake, planetarium and Navy Pier. Short cab ride to most attractions.

    We stayed 4 nights in the Congress Plaza. The lobby is very extravagant, detailed in gold paint. Gorgeous. Unfortunately, the rooms are a little out dated and in need of renovation. The bed is stiff and lumpy. The outlets had some exposed wires. The smell was a little stale. There are also picketers outside who have been protesting the congress plaza daily for the last 6 years (although they are non-aggressive, friendly protesters). Despite these negative details, the location is perfect. You get a beautiful view of millenium park. For the price, it is a great deal (if you're the type of person who can overlook the above mentioned flaws).

    When we went to check into our hotel, we were one hour later than the check-in time listed. There was a sea of people waiting in the lobby, and we were soon to join. None of the rooms were ready, so we had to wait a half an hour - with no beverage, service, or any type of discount/ammenity. After checking into our box of a room, we were constantly reminded of the rail service - VERY loud. The paint was chipping off the trim; the bathroom was unvented and small, and we had a view of the top of the building. Overall, I'm thankful we were there to spend a night on the town, and utilize the hotel as just a place to sleep. The less time spent in the hotel, the better.
