Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret is a terrific all-inclusive that really caters to families. We went with two kids under 6, and my wife's parents. The best part about the resort is its expansiveness. There are Mayan ruins on the property (part of an overall Mayan village that also has ruins in the park next door), jungle paths, lots of activities, a perfect lagoon for swimming and snorkelling.
Single/party-minded travellers won't like the resort's detachment from all things urban, ie. nightlife, but if you want to stay away from the crowds of Cancun, and don't care for stuff in-town, this could be good for you.
Downside, the rooms themselves. Easily the worst bed I've ever slept on (we suffered 9 nights!). Plus, stick to the buffet, the "reservation" restaurants don't live up to their hype. You get the same food, you just have it served to you. Big deal. -

The Xcaret is a beautiful resort, spread out among lush grounds with low profile buildings. Having all this space meant that there was always a quiet spot at one of the pools if you wanted to escape the "party pool". The main building and lobby is spectacular. The pools were beautifuls, our rooms were very comfortable (although there was a slight musty smell which seems to dog most tropical locations). The staff was very friendly and helpful also. Being next door to the Xcaret park was a real plus - we spent a full day there and enjoyed it very much. If you want to splurge, swim with the dolphins!
On the down side, there is no natural beach here, although they have built a very scenic manmade beach, with a large buffet restaurant for bkfst and lunch. The water is shallow if you have small children. However, since it was built down below the ground level, it tended to be very hot at the beach. There were no watersports that we saw. We spent more time at the pools.
We did not like the buffet restaurant and tried to dine at the a la carte restaurants as much as possible. The buffet was OK for breakfast but their attempt to provide a lot of variety for food at all meals often resulted in food being either dry, or overcooked, or cold. If you go, stick to the restaurants.
Playa del Carmen and its shopping and restaurants is only 15 minutes away and is good for an afternoon of shopping and dinner out.
This was our first time at an all inclusive, and having everything onsite was convenient. In the future, I would prefer to stay at a place just like this with the option to dine out. -

This was our first big family vacation with our kids and grandkids. It was nice to have all inclusive with the small children. The resort gave us plenty of room to move around. The food was always fresh and well presented. Employess at the hotel were always friendly and helpful. Pools were cleaned daily and there were groundkeepers always tidying up the resort. It is a beautiful hotel and resort.

let's face it - this place does not have a 5 star rating by accident - I can't understand these people who complain about a hard bed or staff service/whatever. The place is set in an ecological preserve - there is a bar or restaurant every 50 yards and a shuttle on property. The place has songbirds/parrots and other wildlife around every corner. The food was above average to exceptional - you choose everything you eat - don't make bad decisions and you will be happy. You can snorkel, see ruins, view wildlife, practice archery, rifle, or play an 18 hole putting green.
They have hammocks set up everywhere. You can be as active or inactive as you like. If you can't enjoy yourself at this place you need medication. This is my third visit to maya and this is the
among the best offered. If you want VSOP cognac and shrimp and scallops it's available - not too many places offer that daily and nightly. This was definitely worth the money. -

Just returned from Xcaret. It was great, if you have anything bad to say about being treated great, eating and drinking all you want in a beautiful setting you are crazy. We are so lucky to be able to do something like this. The grounds are so nice and kept very clean, you can walk in the beautiful paths for hours. All the food was great. I highly recommend this resort.
