We spent 10 nights at the La Jolla Mismaloya and had a great time. It was a very relaxing atmosphere. Both of us had been to P.V. before therefore we were mainly looking for some peace and quiet. The pools are very nice and the grounds are very well kept. The property is small enough you don't have to walk very far for anything. We have traveled to these type of resort properties a lot and were impressed with the amenities. Keep in mind it is about 15-20 minutes south of the town of P.V. This didn't matter to us but it might you. ($* cab ride one-way) The location is far enough south that the ocean was much nicer than other areas of P.V. The hotel is surrounded on three sides by mountains. Food at the resort was ok. Don't expect gourmet. The buffets have lots of options so you can always find something to fill you up. The specialty restaurants have a little better quality food but don't expect too much and remember this is Mexico. The dishes are prepared using Mexican recipes not Tex Mex as so many of us are used to (there is a difference). We opted for their "Premium" package when we arrived. For an additional $*/person per night you get a room on one of the two top floors ( 8 or 9) therefore you have a better view of the ocean and pool plus you get more nights at the specialty restaurant and access to a room with unlimited internet. Probably wouldn't pay it again. Didn't see the value. Also, all the rooms are the same throughout the resort. Probably one of the nicest hotel rooms we have stayed in outside the U.S. Very large with two living areas.

We've been to Vallarta over 15 times and to Mismaloya at least five or six times but only once since the beach washed away and Barcelo bought the hotel. Our experience there this time was just as good as ever. At first I was disappointed that they no longer had choices of rooms with one bedroom and two baths w/living room or two bedrooms, no kitchen, and only one bath, but the courteous staff showed us several options before we checked in so we could choose the one we liked best. We picked a room on second floor with bigger balcony, good view no palm trees in the way like there are on floors 3, 4, 5, & 6 and a bedroom w/living room. The remodeling is very nice, though the sliding closet doors leave a lot to be desired. They were troublesome, but we just avoided sliding them very much. All the staff were friendly and service was prompt. One of the pool waiters, X, was the son of X, who worked there back when the hotel was La Jolla de Mismaloya. The food was fine. We're more likely to be found eating down the beach or at Tonio's in the village, but for breakfast and snacks, we had no complaints. Loved the mimosas every morning at breakfast and the great service. Even though it's all inclusive and the paperwork says "tips included," it always pays off to leave twenty pesos for good service. It's much appreciated and absolutely remembered by each wait person. We were there in August and are going back in October and possibly December. Can't wait to see our "friends" again!

This was a great hotel. Big comfortable suites, nice big pools and great activities, great food, excellent service. The outdoor adventure add ons are a lot of fun. Staff is great, very friendly and helpful. I give it 4 stars only because the hotel is about 20 years old, though it doesn't look quite that old, it is showing its age just a little. The finish work isn?t great, but it is still a beautiful hotel. Gated property with security and filtered water, we drank it and never got sick once. A great time for a bargain price. The tile floors that are all over indoors and out, are very slippery when wet, so may not be a good thing for older folks.

We spent 6 day 5 nights last may for our fifth wedding anniversary, and because the swine flu, the resort was almost empty and that was great because we were treated like royalty, but at the end of the week, they had more occupancy and their staff was not enough, we had to wait for towels, drinks and food, the buffet was not open following the supposed schedule and the activities were not present. In addition, the adults only pool was always crowded with little kids, diving screaming and crying and the security did not want to bother. The 'a la carte"" Italian restaurant was OK the first day but at the end of the week, the ravioli that my wife ordered was worst than 99 cents store ravioli; I had enough, back when I was single. The bartenders were amazing trying to keep up with the thirsty crowds but they got overwhelmed. Would come back if I have children, they will love it.
