San Francisco has an outstanding public transportation system, very easy to get around. Take the BART train from SFO, the Hilton is a 10 minute easy walk from Powell Station. A very nice hotel with large rooms that are comfortable and quiet., although the lobby can get mobbed with conventioneers which this hotel caters to. The front desk staff was friendlly and extremely accomodating, the concierge desk personnel were curt and dismissive. Right on the fringe of a bad area so expect a gauntlet of homeless people asking for money.

  • Not too bad...

This hotel was just your typical Hilton..nothing fancy. Pretty basic, clean, comfortable. The staff was very helpful. The hotel is very close to the Union Square shops and within walking to China Town and the cable cars. The neighborhood is shady...if you walk one way it is very run down...seems to be a bad area of town with a lot of panhandlers. If you walk the other way..it's a bunch of very fancy shopping (Chanel, Nike Town, Macy's...) So, take that for what it is worth. The hotel is several miles from the airport. If you book through a online travel website it will automatically charge you for the Super Shuttle to the airport. The shuttle takes FOREVER!! And they pick up everyone they possible can until the shuttle is full before they head for your hotel or the airport. I would avoid this shuttle and just take a cab. It's around the same amount but much faster and convenient. ($37.00) The hotel is about an $9 cab ride or a long $5 cable car ride to Fisherman's Warf, and the Alcatraz Pier.

  • Stunningly mediocre

This hotel is cashing in on the Hilton name, and I expected much more than what we got. Booked online through the Hilton website at a very good rate (unrefundable). Upon arrival, we went to the Hilton Honors check-in, avoiding a fairly long lineup. I don't understand why, when rooms are booked well in advance, that when checking in the desk still has to hunt around for rooms. I had booked 2 rooms with 2 queens. Eventually the desk clerk found two adjacent (he offered us separate floors originally!). Then as he attempted to assign them to us, one of them had already gone, snagged by the clerk at the next wicket for another customer. Ridiculous! We eventually got 2 rooms in tower 2, 14th floor, opposite each other. This took about 20 minutes. I was not impressed. The bathroon has stupid double doors that don't lock. There is nowhere to hang your clothes or bathrobe; no fan, which leaves the room looking like a steambath after a shower. The bath itself didn't work properly when turning on the shower, half the water still came out the tap. The towels are flimsy. The main room was ok, but smelled faintly of smoke even though we were in a non-smoking room. The carpet needed cleaning and there was a cigarette burn on the drapes (hence the smoke smell). Don't even think about paying for any of the meals or other amenities. The mini bar prices are nothing short of robbery. Local phone calls are charged (free at other Hilton family hotels that I have stayed at ). Very edgy location with police standing guard outside at night. After I use up my Hilton Honors points, I'm going to start fresh with another hotel chain.

My husband and I went to the city for a romantic getaway. I wish we had stayed somewhere else. The hotel seems to be on the edge of the Union Square district and is surrounded on three sides with urine-smelling streets of questionable integrity after dark. When we went to park, we were shocked by the parking charges (they've gone up even since they were posted on travel website). $59 was the quoted price for valet and $55 for self-parking. The doorman offered us an ""insider"" tip to the cheapest parking garage in the city. What a lie...three blocks away and more expensive than the place across the street from the hotel! Upon checking in, we were offered two queen beds in a smoking room. We were able to argue out way into a non-smoking ""king"" sized bed room (it wasn't a king, seriously). The ""view"" was of a wall twelve feet outside our room. The room itself was tiny with a curiously configured bathroom the size of a closet. We were told the hotel was full and we weren't able to change rooms. EVERYTHING costs more at this Hilton. The continental breakfast is $23 (for one) with a $5 room delivery charge and a 20% convinence fee. Even Starbucks charges twice what they normally do. We woke up to housekeeping staff yelling their conversation down the hall and laughing loudly (at 6 am). Asking them to please quiet down didn't work and neither did calling down to the front desk. All in all, I have sayed at 2 star hotels that put this 4 star to shame. Spend your money elsewhere and get more for your buck.

We traveled from San Diego. At first glance everything seemed fine. We asked for an upgrade when we checked in but the unconcerned and uncaring man checking us in would not accomodate. After seeing our room I was instantly disappointed. My husband went to the lobby and asked for the manager. He asked for an upgrade showing proof the 4th was also my B-day. After turning him down three times he finally came through. We would have to have smaller beds but I would get the view of the fireworks I wanted. The room was much better than the first one they gave us. I was happy the whole trip knowing I had such a beautiful view to end each day of my stay. We got the 37th flr of the 1st tower facing the bay. I would recommend the Hilton to my friends and family.
