I just got back from my first trip to San Fran. I wasn't sure where the best place to stay would be and I took the advice of the reviews I'd seen on Trip Advisor for the Hotel Carlton, because it was a nice hotel/decor, good location and it was also a green hotel. It always makes me nervous to stay somewhere blindly going off of reviews like that but I have to say this was the best hotel I have ever stayed at. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the service/staff was impeccable. The lobby is beautiful and cozy/comfortable with great furniture/accessories. The front desk staff, cleaning staff -everyone - was just so friendly and went out of their way to help us with anything we needed during our stay. Coming from NYC where a lot of hoteliers/staff are very rude or indifferent, it was really nice to have people who were genuinely nice and went above and beyond the normal level of service just to be helpful. We ordered takeout when we first got there because we were starving after a 5 hour flight, and the front desk called to bring plates up to our room because they knew the delivery people often didn't include them. They also had a complimentary wine reception every night....Just things like that really made a difference. The rooms were also very comfortable. I had a room with 2 full beds with myself and my mom and we had plenty of room in each bed. The room also had a walk in closet and a safe that you could store things in with your personal credit card instead of a code, to ensure that no one could break the code (not that anyone in that hotel probably would have because they were so awesome!) It is only about 7 short blocks to the main area of downtown/Union Square but is also right off the bus line, so if you buy a bus pass you don't even need to worry about the walk. Great place to stay - I would highly recommend it to anyone.

It reminded me of a place I would have loved during the college years. Eclectic, and funky chic. The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom more than tolerable. If you are used to Holiday Inn, Marriott, and the like but don't like vanilla decor, then this place would be a great alternative; however, it doesn't have amenities like a gym I don't think. Wireless internet is free with room and easy to access, TV is 40" LG. As for the neighborhood, it's not the most convenient but it's decently situated. Finally, the staff is excellent and in that way comparable to the kind of service you'd see at the W. I'd certainly stay again in a pinch, but would prefer the Triton if I were to dip below the W.

This is the 3rd time I have stayed in the Hotel Carlton, I go back because the price is good and the staff is very nice. It is older but the linens are good & beds comfortable & clean. The manager has a wine tasting daily & you always meet friendly people from all over the world. Only negative is the lobby needs some sprucing up.

Other reviewers have talked about the attentiveness of the staff and I will agree with that. But that is the sole good experience I had at the Carlton. The decor is an attempt at shabby chic/exotic travel which comes off as dingy college dorm. The rooms are noisy and just shoddy, Had a good breakfast at the hotel restaurant and good service from the waiters, but the bohemian/world traveler theme was ruined by bright flourescent lighting.
