Best mystery hotel ever! I've stayed at other mystery and regular-priced 3- and 4-star hotels in this city before (I also used to live in the bay area so am well acquainted with older accomodations) and this one by far is the best value for my dollar. Right next to the subway. A few things worth mentioning: Staff & service - Professional and very business-like which was expected since it's in the Civic Center area. Most of our fellow guests were walking suits. Impressive lobby was gloriously preserved and decorated. Room quality - Old wallpaper with curling at some of the edges but very well-maintained room otherwise. Heater/air conditioning unit is one of those big old rumbling (but not obnoxious) ones by the window against the wall where you turn a knob to regulate temp. It may not pinpoint the temp to an exact degree, but it works just fine. No view except other room windows but that didn't matter to us. Lotion/shampoo/conditioner were not the cheap kind. Smelled great. Bed - sheets were luxuriously soft. Bed was extremely comfortable and plush. Quiet atmosphere. No noise issue. Awesome old pic frames of SF streets along the walls. Bath - great water pressure, didn't have to wait for water to get hot (at least for an old hotel). The shower head even had a few settings. Cleanliness - Carpet, bathroom floor, and wallpaper were not new (think character, not worn out) but extremely well-maintained.

The room was clean and the facilities well-maintained. Nothing about it wowed me, but we enjoyed our stay. The room was a little small, but we weren't planning on spending a lot of time there anyway. They have very limited parking, it's expensive, and it can take a while for the valet to get your car; this being San Francisco, you should really get a Muni passport anyway. There's quick access to the subway as well as good restaurants and other activities within walking distance. Overall, I recommend the Whitcomb.

This hotel is IN THE MIDDLE of one of Francisco's busiest areas We should have used the valet parking. It would havesaved time and confusion. The staff was very gracious about providing help in finding our way around. It was a very good experience.
