The Fairmont Orchid property is beautiful! We spent part of our honeymoon there and enjoyed it very much. The lagoon/beach area is very nice and is a romantic spot to watch the sunset. We were spoiled at the Fairmont Kea Lani the week before in Maui. The staff is outstanding at the Kea Lani. The same cannot be said of the Fairmont Orchid staff who could care less if we were on our honeymoon or anything else for that matter. We still managed to have a wonderful time.

This hotel was well worth the stay. The staff was friendly and willing to help in any way. The pool was nice and heated with plenty of seating around. The lagoon was nice, didn't see any turtles at the hotel. Room was comfortable with a nice bed. The food at the restaurants was very good. All though pricy my wife got an ocean side massage and was very happy with the service. We will definitely stay again in the future.

This hotel was really nice and the staff was very attentive and courteous. You have to sign up for the presidents club, which is free, to get free Internet and golf club rentals. The pool was a good size with lots of coves and drink service which was nice. The beach was lacking in size, but it never was really packed. The snorkeling in the bay was fantastic. We saw probably 10 turtles and a myriad of Hawaii kine fish. The activities pass is overly expensive and the ala carte rentals of stuff is even more extravagantly over priced. The snokel quality is extremely poor and we had to exchange several times There is a Foodland grocery store that sells snorkels on the resort property Go there, it's cheaper to buy the snorkel there and leave it behind or donate it. The food is astronomically over priced. Don't even bother with the breakfast buffet; it's $33 for what should cost $15. It's not better than a breakfast buffet at a Howard Johnson's. I did get a smoothie though which I thought was expensive, but I would have paid triple for it because it was amazing. All of the food in general is over priced as you would expect at a resort. There is a lunch restaurant by the beach. If you don't like bugs flying on your food, do not go there. The bugs were awful and there was nothing they could do about it. The food was above average but the bug situation was terrible. The beds were very comfortable and the linens were clean. We had no trouble sleeping because everything was so comfortable. The resort is kind of in the middle of no where. It's about 30 minutes from kona and 30 minutes from waimea. Waimea is a small town with a lot of restaurants and kona has a nice little touristy beach town area. Those are good places to explore and have a day or two excursion. In general, I would not recommend the fairmont orchid. The food quality was generally slightly above average, but the price was way too high for everything. The snorkeling was nice, but there is A LOT of good snorkeling on the big island. The activities pass was a complete rip off. The rooms and service were adequate, but not amazing. The hotel was very pretty.

The Fairmont Orchid is a beautiful hotel. Our partial ocean view room was an excellent value. We stayed in room 2430 (4th floor of 6 floor resort) Also, to our surprise, the room actually had an ocean view. Anyone that has ever booked a partial ocean view room at a Hawaiian resort only to show up and see that you have to stand in a far corner of the window area/balcony and peer between shrubs, trees, etc., knows what I am talking about. The Hale Kai (outdoor) restaurant was the best value resort restaurant and had great ocean views - steps from the beach. The restaurant has a sand floor (very unique). Be sure to travel off of the resort property and take a walk along the shoreline toward the Mauna Lani Resort. You'll be sure to pass a few green sea turtles sleeping on the beach during your walk. If you like coffee, be sure to hit the hotel lobby before 6:30 a.m. They offer a limited amount of free Kona coffee. The fitness center is nice and is open 24 hours (I think).
