This hotel was built in 1913, boasting the "fastest elevator in California" at the time. It still runs at the same speed (very slowly) and has the same heavy doors and sliding gates. The only thing missing from that moment of naustalgia is the operator in the white gloves and green uniform - that you get to do for yourself. The room was tiny, but clean and entirely functional, with all of the modern Ramada amenities (1-cup coffee maker, large TV, hair dryer, toiletries, etc.). The bed was confortable. The view of the airshaft was limited at best. There were abundant clean towels, hot water, and shower that worked nicely. Considering the price of other convention hotels in SD, the Ramada was a very good value and entirely comfortable and workable. I would not choose it for a holiday get away, but for a man alone at a convention it was just fine.

If you want a hotel that is great at customer service this is the place for you!! From the minute that we arrived at the hotel we were treated as a part of the family. We booked the trip with no plans in mind, but Leslie was quick to help us with directions to local attractions. It came time for food which is a priority for me in the group and J was the master of helping with ideas along with K's support. Ciro's pizza will deliver and it is right around the corner from the hotel...spinach and mushroom was delicious and a great recommendation to eat on the rooftop terrace. Also, for dessert you can walk a block to Hub's for an ice cream sandwich which is only a dollar! F will bring your car around a fast as he can with a smile and P is always always there to help if a friend gets sick and needs to go to the Gaslamp Medical Center;Starbucks is close by for those that do not like throw-up. The only complaint is that the bathtub was a slow drainer, but they tried and tried to address the situation. An excellent example of addressing our needs was on night 3 when our televison did not work, P sent N up to our room within 5 minutes of our phone call! Also, we LOVED room 816!!! Go to the restuarant attached to the hotel for great breakfast food (also another recommendation from J )!

We changed our reservations at the last minute from 2 people to 4 people. The staff were very helpful. We were given a 2 room suite with one bathroom. It was so much better than the usual one room with 2 beds in it. The location was perfect and the roof was great for viewing the city at night.

This is a nice boutique hotel. The room (queen size bed) is perfect for one person. Any more than that might have been a little cramped (think European hotel rooms). Couldn't be in a better location. Walking distance to almost everything and what wasn't, you can walk a block or 2 and catch either a trolley or bus to where you want to go, including Coronado, La Jolla or even Tiajuana. As a single woman traveler, the neighborhood felt very safe. The rooms are clean and the rooftop terrace offers a great view of the city and a nice place to sit and relax. I would definitely go back. The only negative was that, with the exception of one woman at the front desk, the staff is neither knowledgable about the city and transportation, or helpful. Hopefully, when you check in, it will be with her. She will provide you with maps, book tours, recommend different activities, etc.

Valet parking is blocks away and, if they're busy, can take some time to bring your car. The building is not handicapped-friendly...just getting in the elevator is a challenge. Staff wouldn't freeze my husband's medication bag after they said they would. The room and location were fine. Located in a restored part of downtown but just six blocks from the wharf and Petco Park. I would stay again but look into other parking and plan ahead for our meds.
