My family (2 children ages 7 & 13) stayed here for 9 days at end of May/early June. My husband I had been here 10 years ago and loved it. This time we brought the kids. There are 3 pools - one of which is heated, and outdoor hot tubs. The heated pool was still cool, but we got used to it and warmed up in the hot tubs. On the weekends, the hotel had activities for the kids - s'mores on the veranda, surfing lessons that my 13 year old enjoyed, book reading for my 7 year old, and movies poolside on Saturday nights. There is also shuffle board & ping pong available everyday - anytime. For Jazz fans, the hotel hosts Jazz concerts on some Friday nights in the summer. We were able to sit out our hotel room balcony and listen to the music for free. The location of the hotel was great as well. While the hotel runs a shuttle down to Balboa Island, we didn't want to wait for it. Even my 7 year old made the walk to Balboa Island without any problem. We also walked over to the Back Bay Science Center and had a good time bird watching and learning about the bay ecology. There is a coffee shop at the hotel and a gift shop. We frequented both. The coffee shop had Starbucks coffee and great chocolate muffins. The nachos at the lounge are huge and were great for sharing with the kids. The lounge also offers a kids menu which is great for my 7 year old ""bird"". We will definitely be back! Enjoyed it even more with the kids along.

The service at the hotel was good the staff was very friendly and helpful, however the hotel leaves a lot to be desired. The entrance and grounds are beautiful but the rooms are old and smell musty. The parking is $19.00 per day for self parking and $27.00 for overnight valet and is returned with bird droppings on it! The food is mediocre and the lobby bar is closed, the bed is hard and you hear the guests above you in the night walking around, all in all not a luxury experience. The location is great but we would not stay there again.

the experience we had was in my opinion, just fine for the price. The rooms I imagine would have been indulgent in the 40's and have a ""cabana"" feel to them with wooden shuttered doors, but the cracks around the door, evident enough to actually see through, the mould in the shower grout, and the tub's multi-layer of peeling paint all left something to be desired. The upside? There is no mini-bar. Hurray! Having been charged for goods that were never taken at another hotel, I applaud this as the Hyatt provided a bar fridge for your own goods which we used extensively. Also, their clock-radio had an iPod plugin. Fabulous! It made vacationing seem less foreign with your own music playing. So, all-in-all, it was fine. breath away from Fashion Island, Balboa, South Coast, and the PCH I would definitely stay again. But don't ask for any more $$ than that from me...
