We spent quite a bit of time reviewing hotels before selecting the H.R. hotel. Pros: Great location on Michigan Ave. Very central to the sights and the river. We showed our Hard Rock Special Access card when we checked in and got a free upgrade to the tower section of the hotel, with great views looking North. Room had a coffee machine and a huge shower. Scott the concierge was great, and pointed us in the right direction each morning with helpful advice, 2 for 1 tickets, and such. There is a Rock Shop right at the hotel, so picking up a gift or two was easy. Cons: Decor was pretty blah, we thought it would be more interesting/exciting even though it was an upgrade.. The hotel seems to draw a rowdy bunch, lots of younger party types.. though we didn't have any issues with noise, I heard of someone complaining when we were in the lobby. No separate restaurant, but a bar/lounge that served food was in the lobby area. I would not recommend this hotel for families with younger kids, on almost every occasion we ran into folks with alternative lifestyles and foul mouths in the elevators (and no, we are not prudes!) .. which makes for an interesting ride up and down..

Brought my kindle fire with me to look up different things to do. Was told it would cost me $13.50 a day to use it in my room, so I didnt use it. Very small bar area at Hotel (Angels & Kings) so crowded thier wasnt even standing room only.

Great location. Competent staff that handles requests easily. Only a few negatives I could think of, but overall the hotel staff has no control of. The plumbing: I think this applies to any hotel thats over 30+ years old. Awkward spurting, choking sounds occur when either flushing or using the shower. In the shower it felt like a mini-massage when it sputtered randomly. The toilet on the other hand had a weak flush, requiring multiple flushes. (ew.) The noise in and outside: The walls near the room door may be not so sound proof as one might imagine. And if your room is next to the service elevator? (eek!) Mine was close - Room 1303. Little rumbling sounds as the elevator cars went up and down. A minor infraction. Also when other guests/staff passed your room, you could hear their conversations quite well. Another uncontrollable noise is the sirens of ambulance/city police vehicles. Michigan Avenue must be the burb of all vehicle activity of most frequent emergency personnel that passes through. You will hear a siren go off nearly 10-20 minutes. Its the most times of any place I've ever stayed at where you heard more emergency sirens then horns being honked from cars. From nyc, seattle, hawaii - chicago was the most frequent. Lastly of my last night was spent complaining about my neighbor smoking marijuana on the floor. (Yea I get it, a rock and roll hotel.) The smell was so strong it was nauseating. (Placed a towel near the door[s] in attempt to stop the infiltration of Mrs Mary Jane scent.) Called front desk and they sent security to investigate. Roughly 20 minutes later, the smell dissipitated. Then neighbor blasted the music from their Ipod dock or T.V and partied away. (I was tired, so this didn't me as much as the smell.)
