I am an upstater, so I am familiar with the NYC attitude. However, I found the front desk staff to be especially rude upon check-in and check-out. This is an old hotel and the rooms are extremely small, as are the bathrooms. My kids had a newly rennovated room where a wall had been knocked down to create a bigger room. The location was OK, close to Empire State Bldg. The attached diner was pretty good, huge portions.

I was so impressed with the hotel! The room was clean and spacious! The location across from Penn Station was so convenient to hopping on the subway and going where ever we wanted to go. The kids loved seeing the empire state building just a block or so down the street when we walked out of the hotel. The guy on the corner sold the best warm bagels and cream cheese from his cart and fresh fruit was available right across the street as well. They even were able to let us check in super early! I couldn't have been more pleased with the hotel!

This hotel has a great location; a block away from Penn Station and MSG. We chose it because we were taking the kids to a late show at the Garden and thought it would be fun to stay in the city. The lobby was bright and stylish. There was a line to check in and we waited a bit, but were told at the desk that we got a free room upgrade. The room was small but nice, and clean, with contemporary, tailored furniture and very comfy beds. We had a separate living room and two full baths (I'm guessing that was the upgrade, very nice, especially since we were traveling with kids). Both the living area and the bedroom had flat-panel TVs with cable, and the living area had a fridge. There were also two decently sized closets. The downstairs diner had fast service and reliable diner fare (although a bit pricey, to be expected for NYC). The only drawback I can think of was the view - the hotel is not a solid square, it has recesses, and even though we were on the 20th floor the only real view we had was of another wall of the hotel. Also, the toilets in the bathroom are industrial, as opposed to residential, meaning they are low and have the metal levers in the back that you flush with your foot, like public toilets. That's more of an oddity than a drawback, really, but for some people that may be a turn-off. Also, shelf space in the bathroom is a bit limited, which can result in some toiletry-juggling. Our stay was brief but overall very enjoyable. We would definitely stay here again.

Our room on the 27th floor was equipped with a shower that was supposed to be 100 degrees and could be made warmer with the push of a button and turn of the dial. I can assure you that the shower was a cold one with the button pressed and the dial maxxed! Rude, to say the least, at 6:00 a.m. With a phone call, the manager sent a representative from maintenance who claimed to "never have seen a shower like that." His supervisor was also unaware of such plumbing--amazing that it is the sole shower like that in a 900+ room hotel and it never needed service, don't ya think? Fortunately, we were given another room with a working hot shower and breakfast passes for their diner.

Other people have said the rooms are small, which they are, but it is NYC, so you shouldn't be spending that much time in your room anyway. While the room was on the small side it was perfectly comfortable, and I had an excellent view of downtown Manhattan, and the room was very clean. The location is perfect in Midtown. You are a block from Penn Station, the subway station is on the same block as you, and cabs are easy to find. The check in lines at 3pm are a little long but they move fast and check out was super easy. I will look to stay here again next time I am in NYC.
