This hotel has the Bart right outside the door as were the buses. A convenient location a few blocks from Union Square and many other popular locations. My plane was well after check out and the staff took care of my luggage so I could do a little more site seeing. To top it off, Starbuck's is in the lobby. What more could you want?

We just wrote the other review and forgot a couple of things: 1. Nice fitness center. 2. In-hotel restaurant. 3. A must-see: The hotel has a little "historical museum" almost hidden in two small rooms at the mezzanine level: A collection of artifacts from the hotel's century-old history, including many of the elaborate menus from the 1920 with prices, advertisements and flyers, old photographs, 1940s bling such as matchbooks (including some old racist ones, probably from the 1930s). See photos.

OMG! SF has street people! (Get over it; this is a great place to stay)

If you are one of those people who likes to complain at the slightest hassle, who prefers living in a gated community to dealing with reality, and who is used to staying at five-star hotels, what are you doing reading this review? The Whitcomb is a 100-year old hotel (built right after the 1906 quake, used as a temporary city hall, and opened as a hotel in 1916). In what now has to be classified as a tourist-class hotel, you can see firsthand the luxury that people enjoyed a century ago. The marble, carved wood and chandeliers are all still there, unrestored and remarkably well-preserved. Our room, although nicely renovated and clean, had many signs of age: Smallish by today's standards, ancient electrical fixtures with conduits outside the walls. Nonetheless, everything was comfortable (excellent beds), the staff was friendly and superbly helpful, and the wireless internet worked flawlessly. The hotel is right on Market Street with buses and trolley cars and BART right there, yet most of the rooms don't front on Market St. and are quiet. Subway, Burger King, and two charming diners are across the street. There's a Starbucks in the hotel lobby (probably why there are no coffee makers in the rooms -- Starbucks probably demanded that). Parking is cheap and includes in-and-out privileges. The ONLY disadvantage is the street people, especially late at night and early in the morning -- and yes, they are everywhere. So what? They are harmless. We are from a nice suburb in the Midwest and brought our two kids. Street people are part of any big city -- our kids have seen them in New York, Paris, and Moscow too. We had a ball in SF. This hotel is a bargain and we would definitely come again.

Upon arrival, had to fix running toilet. Electrical outlets were so loose they wouldn't hold plugs. Bathroom fan was so loud (vibration) that we spent as little time in there as possible. Free internet access password had to be re-entered each time. Market street in this area is rampant with homeless people asking for handouts.
