The hotel was in the beginning of the scarey part of town and I was without hot water for the duration of the trip. I notified the front desk and the informed me that they'd have someone up there in 15 minutes. They never showed and I took 3 cold showers. I tried to turn on the radiator and it never got hot.

I read the reviews before coming here and was a little put off, but the location and price made me think the Renoir could work for me. I got to the hotel and it was perfect. Older - and charming because of it. 2 blocks down from Nordstroms is a perfect location for everything I had to do for my stay. Yes - There are homeless people here - as there are all over SF. They were more polite and reserved than the ones that hassled me when I stayed at FAR pricier places on Union Square.. For people who think hundreds of dollars for something newer and hyper-decorated is a good use of their money, have fun paying *** to ***+++ per night. I'm sure you're worth every penny. For those of us who wonder whether our lives truly are enhanced by an artificial waterfall or a human door opener the Renoir is a nearly perfect, quiet, pleasant and reasonable place to set up base camp for an exploration of a great town.

The service was outstanding. Very friendly staff. The rooms were ok, kind of small. Beds were pretty bad. As far as would I stay here again it would depend on the price, if there was something else for like $* $* more a night I would try someplace else because of the beds.

Pleasant, clean place, nonsmoking, easily comparable to budget chain motels both in appointments and cost. Has a modest breakfast room (no free bf), there are competent coffee/donut/pastry shops nearby, plus trivially easy access to upscale restaurants. Down at the heels neighborhood outside the "front" door; but at night the front door is locked --and the backdoor opens on a quiet, well-lit district. Two blocks to Civic plaza, SF Symphony and the Opera House. 1 block from BART, dozens of buses cross within steps of the hotel - as near as I can tell very simple access to the entire city. Two blocks from Library with a vast $2 used book shop ! The hotel blurb forgets to mention there is Wi-Fi available in the rooms for a lower price than most places, including the budget chains. The staff are *very* competent, very friendly, the other guests I met were all honest people - many travelling on retirement budgets. Roughly 50-50 Americans vs else. In my case, I stayed at the Renoir while attending a conference at one of the high end hotels. My total air-fare plus hotel cost was lower than just the room chargest at the conference hotel. What's not to like ?

Renoir Hotel is disgusting and filthy. There are bed bugs as i found out. As one walks in the lobby, the carpet greets you with filth. The rooms are sented with Mildew/mold and the room rugs are as dirty as the lobbies. Windows are jammed so one can not open them. The bird droppings are everywhere in the plenum area outside the rooms. It smells bad everywhere rooms have no airconditioning, they give you a fan to plug in. They try to mend the fact that it is in a poor sector of town, It is horrible with the bums, drugies, everywhere. They lock the front enterence and one must walk to the back exit not on Market. This is dangerous for the lighting does not exist. Elevator's are slow and filthy inside with red lined carpet. They had parties going on Friday night till 4am and nothing was done. It was avbsolutley the worst experience that i have ever had in any hotel in the US. The managment did nothing about it. I had to be moved, because the room had bed bugs. It was bad. They tried to cover it up but was not willing to give me my money back. It needs to be knocked down. They have a picture on the net with numbers of pople in the front of the hotel. It is very deciving for it covers the front of the block which is falling apart. Most buildings are empty and lease signs are in the windows. The front desk had no clue that the hotel rooms are just a pit. As i compained " I was told that don't Worry, Worry about the people who had the room before you" 5 days i will never forget. TRASH IT !
