I have to believe that the folks that have rated this facility with more than 3 stars are either, Inexperienced travelers or employees of Starwood Hotels and Resorts! The "upgraded" garden view rooms are very small, with tiny bathrooms. They talk about their 5 star service and how they want to make your stay wonderful...but that is all it is... just talk. They nickel and dime you for everything, including $40 day for beach lounger chairs! $25 per day for a useless resort fee. The staff is really good at saying "I'm sorry", but never correct the problem you are having. It took the "aloha" spirited staff 4 days to even address my issues. The good news is: the common areas are gorgeous and the hotel could not have a better location.

We were celebrating our 34th anniversary. The front desk clerk who checked us into the hotel was absolutely fabulous! Upon learning it was our anniversary he sent up a special welcome gift. The nightly "turn downs" with chocolate mints made us feel special. The staff would ALWAYS greet us with a smile and "aloha." We loved our stay and were depressed the day we had to leave. This is our 2nd stay at this hotel and would recommend it 100%. Our only complaint, however, was with the valet crew. Upon arrival they were gracious and had a lei and necklace ready for us, but when they learned that my husband was going to self-park, they immediately put back his beaded necklace and made some "under the breath" comment about it. Unfortunately, it was not quiet enough that I could still hear the comments and observe the rude behavior. It made me feel embarrassed and unwelcome! It was horrible. (My husband never got his "welcome gift.") One older valet gentleman seemed to realize what happened and tried to be a little apologetic, but magical moment was gone and it made us very nervous about our stay. Fortunately, the front desk people and Concierge made up for the lack of grace and cordial behavior of the valet crew. Overall our stay was wonderful!

My wife and I were on Oahu for our 27th anniversery and have always wanted to stay at the Royal Hawaiian. The service was great and the restaurants were excellent. We loved the MaiTia bar. What a view! The rooms are on the small side but that is to be expected in an older property. This hotel is great trip back in time. We felt like hawaiian royalty.
